I have TB 1.5.0.9 now. Windows 2000. MS Word 2000. Whenever I receive
an attachment file named anyname.doc, I cannot open it directly from
Thunderbird. The error message is "Anyname.doc could not be opened,
because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the
association in your preferences." After a lot of fooling around, I
found I could save the attachment to disk, try to remember where it got
saved to, and open it with MS Word. Files with other extensions (.xls
or .jpg or .mp3 for example) all open properly with their associated
programs.

Is "preferences" the same thing as "tools, options"? I looked in tools,
options, attachments, view and edit actions; it said that an anyname.doc
is supposed to open with MS Word. How can I make this happen? I do
have MS Word installed in the default location. Am I supposed to be
looking for some "preferences" somewhere else?

[Thunderbird-->Preferences]*-->Attachments
<View & Edit Actions>

delete the one currently in there for documents (doc)
{highlight it hit remove}

Now the next time you run into one of these Thunderbird will tell you it
doesnt know what to do with it. Browse and select the proper application
