Every time I access a newsgroup Thunderbird asks me if I want to
subscribe. This is despite the fact that I'm already subscribed.

I'm running v2.0.0.23.

Sometimes it's enough to unsubscribe, shut down TB, restart TB and
resubscribe to the news group.

If that doesn't work, then:
Navigate to your profile, find the News folder. In it you will see two
or three files for every newsgroup you have ever subscribed to
(including ones you've unsubscribed.) One of these files will be very
large, since it contains all posts you've downloaded. Sort into alpha
order, and delete the ones for the newsgroup that's giving you trouble.
Delete all the unsubscribed ones while you're at it. That should fix the
problem.

If you want to save some posts, do this first. I recommend you use Save
As to save them in external folders. (I do this as I read NGs.) Then it
doesn't matter whether TB saves them.

Also Compact all folders.

Never mind.... I fixed it. Trying to delete the account with
Thunderbird and then reestablishing it using another name had no effect.
I ended up using Windows Explorer to find the files the newsgroups
were hiding in and deleting all of them that way. I then resubscribed
one final time in the usual manner. That time it took.

Everything is back to normal now.

Can you be more specific? I'm having the same problem.
