How to get all newsgroup headers

I've downloaded some of the headers on a newsgroup. But, the newsgroup
has more headers than I downloaded. How do I tell TB3RC1 to get all of
the headers once I've downloaded some of them?

TB will by default download only 500 new headers, unless you tell it
otherwise. It downloads the most recent ones, and marks its next
download list as starting after the most recent header. If more than 500
new messages are available whether to download them all.

So, to see the earlier headers, you have to make TB download all headers
from the beginning. Try this:

Unsubscribe, shut down TB, delete the relevant files in
\YourUserName\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profile\...\News, restart TB,
resubscribe, and when TB asks you about how many headers to download,
either change the number to something like 1,000, or click All.

The path to \YourUserName depends on your version of Windows.
\Application Data is a hidden (system) folder, you have to set Folder
Actions to Show Hidden files and Folders to see it.

Not necessarily. In TB 1.5, when you select the number of
headers for your first download you're given the option of marking the
rest as "Read". If you don't mark them as Read you can later download
some or all of the older headers easily. I don't know if this
capability is also available in TB2 and/or TB3.

You must still be using XP. In Vista the default location of
TB's profile is:

C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles

and I think it's different still again in Win 7.

In TB 1.5, if you initially selected to *not* mark the remainder
as "Read":

Tools --> Account Settings... --> [News account name] --> Server Settings

[x] Ask me before downloading more than [_nnn_] messages

Set the number nnn to whatever number of headers you want to download
and close the Account Settings dialog.

Open the news server and select the desired newsgroup.

File --> Get Next nnn News Messages

Nnn here is the number you just entered in the Account Settings
dialog, and will download the next nnn *older unread* headers than
what you have previously downloaded. Of course, if you initially
marked the remainder as "Read" this won't work because there are no
older unread headers to download. As I said, I don't know if this
capability is available in TB2 and/or TB3.
