(IMAP4/port 143 instead of POP3/port 110) and leaves messages on
the IMAP4 server. I can't find any settings in tools/options to correct
the failure of automatic detection. Any hints?

delete the account and re-create it. When TB goes into it's "automatic
discovery" mode, halt it, and do a manual setup. Apparently someone on
the dev team thinks that IMAP is the only system worth using, so if your
ISP supports it, that's what the wizard will set up.
