has anyone else managed to get the red x to appear on all tabs inside
thunderbird... ?

the normal fix in about:config to set

mail.tabs.closeButtons;

from 1 to 3 doesn't do it...

1 works for me, which is the default (excluding first tab)
default theme.

I notice that in TB3 ctrl-W closes a tab, but with
only one tab displayed it closes the program. That's slightly
different to Fx where 'close tab' (ctrl-w) and 'close window' are
different.

It would be better IMO if TB were the same as FX and ctrl-W was labelled
'close tab' and did not close the program - but it's obviously a minor
thing.

OTOH the default behaviour of Fx 3.5 when you close the last tab is
questionable and has been much debated.

(This is Linux - shortcuts might be difference elswhere.)

I prefer "2" - no X on any of the tabs.

Now we just need FaviconizeTab and ColorfulTabs for TB3 and things will
really be looking good.

In Windows, it's the same. And the unconventional ctrl-W closing the
program isn't new to TB3; it was there (much to my annoyance) in
earlier versions, too.

So it doesn't look as if it's worth raising again, especially in the
light of the subsequent comment:

"Suggest the discussion of shortcuts is best done somewhere else
(another bug or newsgroup). Be aware, such discussions rarely have
useful results, historically." How true ;-)

In passing, I see that a comparison between Fx and TB behaviour is made
in this comment about ctrl-T

Agree as to the colored tabs!
And I've also changed to 2 -- incidentally, I didn't see a change
using 3 -- what does it do -- it's not listed as one of the options
here:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1343349.html

Since most people are mice, what is needed is the same as in FX --
double click on a tab to close it, but guess cntrl/W is sufficient for
me, except for fear of closing the program.

changing to 3 does nothing in TB... but in FF it creates a rex x on each
tab...

after reading thru the bugzilla, i understand now there is no way to put
a close option on the first default tab in TB...

Setting mail.tabs.closeButtons to 3 makes a 'X' button appear at the
right side of tab bar.
Additionally you can set mail.tabs.autoHide to false to make Default
always appear.
