Do you have a suitable handler installed ? Microsoft Word would be the handler of choice under Microsoft Windows; no idea what the equivalent
(if any) might be for a Linux-based system.

Not necessarily. :-)

For a GNU/Linux system, the choices would most likely be LibreOffice or OpenOffice. A quick search seems to indicate that LibreOffice is what is offered as the standard choice with Puppy Linux. (It's what I use with Ubuntu.)
However, having one installed may still not cause a document to open *within* the browser. Matter of fact, I personally would rather not open a word document in my browsers. Seems that a lot would be missing.

Windows XP SP3
SeaMonkey 2.13.2
As I recall, the last time I requested SeaMonkey to open a .doc file
from a Web page's link, the file opened in a separate Word window and
not in the browser window. I think this is because there is no Word
plugin for the browser to use. Of course, this was sufficiently long
ago that it might have been with Windows 98 instead of Windows XP; and
it might have been with Mozilla Suite instead of SeaMonkey.

Hello fellow puppy linux user.
What do you use? OpenOffice? LibrOffice? Abiword?
In the preferences of SeaMonkey, helper applications, you have to configure the
one you use.
For OpenOffice/LibrOffice swriter, for AbiWord abiword

If you are using the standard version of LibreOffice (non-distro), the
plugin is included in the .deb & rpm install:
/opt/libreoffice3.6/program/libnpsoplugin.so
In that case, open LO: Tools|Options|Internet|Browser Plug-in: Display
documents in browser
For Ubuntu/Debian distro versions install 'mozilla-libreoffice' which
installs the same plugin:

Thanks for highlighting the plugin way, but I don't know if it is this what the
OP has in mind.
I have some problems with the concept to use a browser as displaying vehicle.
To see a pdf document referenced in a link, the helper application I use is
epdfview.
I can read then and eventually save a copy.

+1 with all documents (pdf or otherwise) I turn off/remove any related
plugin. However, the plugin is there if the OP (who's emails I do not
see) wishes to use/try.

Just don't try to fill out forms and expect them to be readable by other
readers (Acroread)...
