Firefox crashes after Quicktime upgrade

recently, FF has begun crashing. It only seems to happen if I'm
listening to an mp3 file using the Quicktime plugin, but exactly when
it crashes seems random - it doesn't crash as soon as I open the file,
or when I try to close it. I recently upgraded from Quicktime 7.1.5 to
7.1.6 (latest stable), but I do not know for sure if this is the
problem, as the crashing started a while after the upgrade. Before
that, I upgraded the JRE to 6.0u1, but that was a while ago. No other
changes except these. I have the crash report from Talkback if it
would help. Thank you so much!

I have had crash problems with FF for the past month. I don't know
what started it but
it seems like it was after upgrading to FF 2.0.0.3.
In one instance it seems always to freeze when I am at DPReview forums
pages.

I was having the same problems with firefox crashing after viewing a
page that loaded the quicktime plugin. I found that the problem was
the ad-block plus extension I had added to firefox. I deleted it's
directory in the extensions folder and everything worked fine.

Adblock Plus can be temporarily disabled from the Tools menu,
and you can see what is being blocked there as well.
Adblock can be temporarily disabled from the Status Bar,

I think dumping an extension by removing it's folder may be
a bit drastic, perhaps no other record of it is kept but to me
that seems like asking for trouble. For instance there is
an extensions.rdf in your profile that I expect is synchronized.
From Tools, add-ons,
extensions you can Disable or Uninstall an extension
from clicking on the extension, also you can set some options
there as well for many extension. Some extensions allow
you to change options in other places as well such as
Adblock (Plus), Web Developer, Menu editor.
With the Adblock extensions it's a matter of changing
items that are blocked to suit your needs. If you only
have trouble with one site. It's no big deal to temporarily
disable Adblock (or the other one) if you trust the site
will not do damage. If you don't trust the site, I wouldn't
rely on Adblock to protect you.

but just move along and go somewhere else, hoping that somebody will fix

I am having the problem without using AdBlock. I am running FF 2.0.0.3
on VISTA. It crashes every time I check a story in Media Matters,
which always involves a Quicktime video. I have learned to switch to
IE if I want to see the video.
This problem may be connected to Vista.

No, it's related to FF 2. I was having the same problems using FF 2 on
my WinXP Pro system. It really seems to not like QuickTime.

You have a system problem.
And please, either teach Avast to put in proper signatures or get rid of
it altoghether.
Are you going to trust everyone else's messages with such a statement?
No (you shouldn't) so why make one? Or let avast make it?
In any case checking outbound messages is a waste of time. You check
inbound to prevent the viruses getting on your computer. And since a
virus must be in an attachment, are you in the habit of sending
attachments you haven't opened?

I've installed/reinstalled/removed then reinstalled a total of 5 times
now. Landing on a site with an embedded QT video still causes FF to
crash - every single time.
For grins, I even tried it on a different machine. Same results.

It's a problem w/ the quicktime plugin. It even exists on the Mac, to
some degree, but is fixable.

You might want to try disabling all plugins in firefox. I had a
similar problem: any page with embedded QT could cause FF to crash. If
it didn't crash FF immediately, FF would always crash when attempting
to leave the page. Also any videos on http://www.apple.com/trailers
would cause FF to crash when attempting to play them. I no longer have
this problem after disabling Adblock Plus.

Same troubles here, often get a crash when trying to leave a page with QT
video. Also happens in FF safe mode or with Adblock disabled. I get a
memory reference error and FF is closed by Win2000. I suspect it's not FF at
all, but the Quicktime player that's crashing. I say this because I have
never seen FF generate a memory reference error, but I have seen QT do it a
lot.

I tried every "fix" I found on the web, none of which work.
Uninstalling Quicktime 7.1.6 and installing 7.1.5 seems to have fixed it
completely.

latest version of RealPlayer and made it the default for all files and
set Firefox to do the same. Quick Time is a bummer.
