I have been having a problem with Firefox ignoring saved cookies, such
that I have to sign in or otherwise provide data that should have been
saved after a restart. I confirmed my privacy settings and compared
them to the settings on another computer which was behaving as desired.
I tried changing the settings and deleting all cookies, to no avail.
I searched here and online, but never found a solution and never got
around to asking the question.

I was poking around in my profile directory and decided, since I had
already deleted all cookies through the GUI, I had nothing to lose. I
deleted the file cookies.sqlite from my profile directory, started
Firefox, and set a couple of test cookies. This seems to have solved
the problem, as my test cookies are now sticking after restart. I'll
follow up if it fails again, but I thought I should share this info in
case anyone else is having the same problem. I assume the file was
corrupted, presumably as a result of one misbehaving cookie that
wouldn't delete. Now I'll never know.

you deleted a *burnt* cookies.sqlite file. :)

I've had the same problem since upgrading[1] to 3.0.11 but dumping
cookies.sqlite didn't help. I've even tried editing the cookies with CS Lite and
they still wouldn't stick. A new Firefox profile[2] seems to have fixed it.

I haven't upgraded to 3.0.11 yet. Normally I don't save cookies, but
I'd like to see see if anything gets screwed up when I do the
upgrade(s). Could you guys tell me your cookie settings so I can try to
reproduce the problem?

In my case I use CS Lite[1] to allow maybe ten or so cookies to be set for
either session or permanent. Anything else is blocked.

I know most who post here would shudder to read this, but I have my
cookies wide open -- accept all cookies including third party and keep
them until they expire. Maybe that's how I ran into trouble in the
first place. I think I'll at least ditch the third party cookies.

Thanks, Reg. I understand what you're suggesting and why it would be
more secure, but I was concerned about needing to type in the allowed
domains in the exceptions dialog (I'm lazy). I searched for and found
an extension to help with this process as Extended Cookie Manager. This
looks like it will make life a little easier and more secure.

We all specialize in different forms of laziness. If you're interested,
check out the extension I noted. It adds an icon to the status bar that
identifies whether the current site is setting a cookie. Clicking the
icon provides a simple way to manage the exceptions for that site,
without the multiple clicks required to get to the exceptions window.

Thanks, and sorry I just got around to trying to reproduce it. I'm
afraid I can't. I set up one profile with CS Lite and blocked all
cookies except a few to keep permanently, and I set up another profile
to just accept all cookies. After upgrading to 3.0.11, in both cases
the cookies from my banks and a few other sites were still ok.

Sorry this doesn't shed any light on what happened with you two guys.
All I can do is wish you luck so it doesn't happen again. ;)
