When FX was reopened, there were no open tabs as is usually the case,
and the history sidebar was empty except for a couple of spam popup
windows that frequently occur (orbitz and another). And the history
file was only 2kb.
Why would this have occurred?

Rename your localstore.rdf file to see if the problem goes away. If that
doesn't fix it, you can always un-rename the file.

So far, it only occurred that one time and hasn't recurred. Perhaps a
small hiccup when closing FX (using File/Exit.

A similar thing happened to me last night. Something about closing
tabs and then I cleared my configured "personal history" (which
doesn't include URL history or bookmarks) and something didn't seem
right. When I opened Firefox (3) again, all of my forum posting
history was gone. All of my bookmarks were still fine though.
Now, this kind of thing happened quite frequently in Firefox 2 and
prior editions of Mozilla browsers. The history was stored in a file
named "history.dat" and if one's computer shut down unconventionally
or if the browser crashed for some reason, the history.dat file would
be rewritten to default empty. That was easy to spot by going to the
profile folder in Documents and Settings.
Firefox 3 though, stores its history in a file named "places.sqlite."
I checked this file (in Documents and Settings\Owner\Application data
\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\garble.default and found it looking full and
healthy at about 5.1 mb size. There was no sign of its having been
rewritten. There was also no sign of a crash report.
The odd thing is that Firefox kept right on using this same -evidently
corrupted- file to store NEW history! It acted like a fresh history
file but was, in fact using the same one it had finished corrupting.
To verify this assumption, I renamed the "places.sqlite" file by
putting a dash in front of it (with the browser closed, of course). I
then pasted in a corresponding "places.sqlite" file from Firefox 3
running on a different computer. Sure enough, when I opened the
browser, my history was all exactly the same as it showed on the other
computer. I switched the files again and it reverted to the way it had
been before.
So I know for a fact there's something wrong with the "places.sqlite"
file but I have no way of opening it to find out what might have been
entered to make it turn off all previous history.
I'll keep the corrupted file for awhile in case there's any way to
check its contents.
This hasn't happened to me since. However, I'll keep your msg should it
again occur!
