FWIW, there was an option box that could have been unticked so as to not
include the toolbar during the upgrade.

Have you checked Tools --> Add-ons?
No, you did not!

Did you try a Windows uninstall?

It was your decision to install the Yahoo bar ;-)

I was wondering about this too...but upon checking, it would appear (on
this XP box here anyways) that all of Java would have to be uninstalled
and not just the update. Personally it wouldn't bug me to do this but a
person on dialup may not be so inclinded to go this route. System
restore maybe, if the OP has a current one.
Thanks, Propman, worked like a charm! I was able to uninstall. :-)
Don
Thanks all, propman's suggestion worked beautifully!
Don
You do not want to uninstall Java! You DO want to uninstall the Yahoo!
toolbar.
Obviously. Please notice the phrase "and not just the update." The OP
had inadvertently installed the Yahoo toolbar via an update to the Java
base install.

Could you please outline how you uninstall the Yahoo toolbar through a
Windows uninstall (ie Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs)?
thanks.

To uninstall the toolbar from Firefox, see:

Heh! Thanks anyway, Jay.... I already know about this method (and posted
the solution to the OP which solved his problem). Pete Holsberg implied
that it can also be acheived via a Windows uninstall routine...hence my
query to him.
I don't think you want to uninstall the update either. It and the
toolbar are not inexorabky linked. Each is a separate piece of software.

If it's not there, then it's a firefox add-on, to be removed from within
firefox.

Sorry, didn't see it in the quoted reply(s).

But uninstalling Java should also remove the Yahoo crap that came with
it. Then Java can be reinstalled taking the proper precautions not to
install anything offered.

From crapware I would expect that. But from a legit company, it would
seem unwise not to remove everything their installer put there.

I aggree, but AVG evidently doesn't make enough money via customers that
they need to turn to Yahoo's advertisement! Thank goodness that the
automakers haven't approached them...or Harley Hogs! :-(
Don
That would be nice, but you'd think people would notice that's not the
case after installing a few programs, and such, would ALWAYS choose
"custom install" and actually look at the options.
Or maybe it helps keep the cost to AVG customers down. <shrug>
How often do you install programs, and how long does it take you to
uncheck a box or two? I really don't see the big deal. And I don't use
AVG, so I'm not being an apologist for them.
Yes, but then you fall into some with no hidden booby traps (toolbars), but did
I really want to install all twelve features.
