I seem to have been badly tricked by http://www.freeantivirusinfo.com/download/

The offer a download FirefoxGoogleToolbarSetup.exe that combines
Firefox with the Google toolbar and offers a free version of Norton
antivirus as a part of the Google Pack.

Well I installed this and then found no Norton associated. I then
decided to uninstall this. This file will not uninstall from the
control panel. I went to the program folder and this file will not
uninstall from the source folder. I then decided to overwrite with
"Firefox Setup 2.0.0.6.exe". I downloaded this 3 times! On trying to
install the clean Mozilla a message comes up:

"Extraction failed" Can not open output file.

Can anybody tell me how to get rid of the installation I got from
freeantivirusinfo.com. Also on searching for this site, I get no other
reports of such a problem. Is freeantivirusinfo.com a scam?

from within FF, click on Tools, Add-ons, and then extensions
and remove the googlebar from there.

As for a good googlebar, try: http://googlebar.mozdev.org/

as for your last question: don't know, but don't install
norton. Its been known to cause problems with ff and tb

I did a rootkit search using a free tool from AVG and found srosa.sys
and hidr.exe . I deleted both and rebooted using the tool. I was then
able to uninstall the program FirefoxGoogleToolbarSetup.exe from
freeantivirusinfo. Also the Firefox Setup 2.0.0.6.exe that failed to
install, now installed perfectly. I cannot say where these hidden
files came from. Two online antivirus scans failed to find them (my
computer antivirus was killed by the same rootkits).

just because you scanned with one program doesn't mean
anything. Not all programs are created equal. Some will
scan this, while others will scan that. Some will scan this
and that, while others will scan part of this and part of
that. Then again, others will only scan this and something
else. Its a good idea to scan with more than one program.

Thanks for the AVG-Rootkit proggy. I used google to find this thread,
because i had firefox update last night to 2.0.0.7 and afterwards
crashed, whereby i was not able to start the browser, including in
safemode. I uninstalled firefox and downloaded the new ver. and
recieved this message when trying to execute the setup file "Execution
failed. Not able to open output file".

My search with AVG Rootkit discovered two files srosa.sys, and
shared.sys. I ran the program, deleted the offending files, and the
new firefox 2.0.0.7 loaded as per normal..

Thanks Eco for starting this thread, and google for helping me find
it!!...

Cheers..
