My attempt to upgrade to 3.5.7 didn't "take"

Because my Firefox version 3.0.4 had stopped creating bookmarks, I
decided to upgrade to 3.5.7. I went through all the business needed to
do this, only to discover that the upgrade didn't take. "About Firefox"
still says "3.0.4." The only thing that happened is that all bookmarks
disappeared from view, even though they're all still there. I know
this, because whenever I enter a couple of letters in the URL field, a
list of bookmarked websites still shows up, just like before. So, those
invisible bookmarks are somewhere.

I don't really need all the stuff and gizmos provided by Firefox. The
only features I like are (1) the ability to enter just a letter or two
in the URL field and get a list of bookmarked websites to open; and (2)
the ability to select a URL for copying just by clicking on it.
(Although Firefox is unable to duplicate bookmarks, thanks to this list,
I learned about the add-on that permits duplicates, and this worked just
fine, up until yesterday's attempt to upgrade. Now, that add-on feature,
which I've downloaded over and over again, refuses to work in this new
version, whatever this "version" is. Is it part 3.0.4 and part 3.5.7?
Who knows?)

Actually, I've been using the last version of Netscape for years, which
is chockful of bookmarks, and works perfectly well. It just does not
have those two features I mentioned above.

I've just downloaded the latest version of Opera, which has somehow
latched onto my Firefox or Safari or Netscape bookmarks, and behaves
like Firefox when it comes to those two features I like (above). This is
good. However, Opera is annoying, since you can't use the Com-Plus keys
to increase size. You're stuck with its limited "zoom" feature, and
everything appears to be so tiny. I'm about to take a look at Google's
browser, but does anyone have any other suggestions? I realize this is
a Firefox list, so I guess I have some nerve asking such a question!

(I use Mac 10.5.)

Uninstall FF using the control panel and then install your new version.
It should work.

I thought that that feature used the URL history, which is nothing to do
with bookmarks.

However if your history data is being kept for a long period without being
cleared, and you tend to bookmark the sites you often visit (and you're
probably do), a broadly similar list of sites would be available both ways.

Do you mean have two bookmarks with different names pointing at the same
URL? You can certainly do that in the bookmark manager (in the Bookmarks
menu). Select a bookmark, copy it. Create a new boomark, paste in the
copied value, change the new bookmark's name to what you want.

Or the exact same bookmark in two places? Copy it from one location, paste
it into another.

It queries both bookmarks and history.
