BTW, quoting from that thread: "hidden extensions". What is that? Looks
to me like some IE behavior.
The installation file for that extension specifies that it will be
hidden. This means that it will not be listed in the extension/add-ons
manager.
Different uses of the word extension. "Hidden extensions" would apply
to Windows systems where certain three letter extensions (.ext)
are hidden. Nothing to do with Firefox extensions (addons)
except that hidden, and read only attributes on files can really mess
up the use of Windows in general and of Firefox use which relies
on access to files in your profile. See

David McRitchie, most questions have been asked before.
Firefox customizations/extensions notes, see
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm
All it means is that the extension will not be listed in the add-ons
manager (or extensions manager for Fx 1.5) and has nothing to do with
three letter extensions being hidden in Windows or hidden attributes for
files.
This is an JRE issue, not mozilla's fault: they specify the max version
in their install.rdf to be 2.0 instead of 2.0.0.*; but: this prevents
only the "java console" menu entry in the extras menu, the java plugin
continues to work.
If you want the java console menu entry back and don't want to wait for
the sun developers to fix this issue, there's a shorter workaround than
that mentioned in the thread cited above:
- navigate to your Firefox application directory, find the install.rdf
file in the extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA}
subdirectory and change the line
<em:maxVersion>2.0</em:maxVersion>
to
<em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>
using your favorite text editor
- delete the file extensions.rdf within your profile directory (firefox
not running!). It will be recreated the next time firefox starts, and
the java console will be enabled again.
I know what a hidden extension is. My question is: why did mozilla
implement such "feature" in the first place?
From my point of view this ain't far from IE 6 behavior where one could
not see/disable the installed addons.
Ah, but in your previous message you typed:
> BTW, quoting from that thread: "hidden extensions". What is that?
when what you meant was something more like "What's up with that?"
You must be careful what you type, lest people take you for your word
(instead of your intent). :) Just remember that ongoing ambiguity in
English just generates more lawyers. :)
Yeah! I couldn't believe it! Isn't that nuts? I expected that I'd get
another update notification as soon as I banished the box!
I mean, this is worse than when Itchy plays Scratchy's rib cage like a
xylophone and gets 2 different notes from the same rib. I really hope...
