tho settings should be same.
from main menu "tools > options > tabs";
[x] When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately
should be selected.
or, open "about:config", set "Filter:" to;
browser.tabs.loadinBackground
and set to 'false'.

If you go to Firefox-->Help-->Restart_with_Add-ons_Disabled, does the
problem still occur? If not, the cause is probably an extension. See

In my case it was the 'FoxTab' add on. Disabled it - works fine again.
