However, some Flash content is very annoying indeed, and I am looking
for a way to selectively disable particularly annoying Flash adverts.
Perhaps there is such an option in Flashblock that I may have missed, or
perhaps there is another way of achieving this?

That is what Flashblock is best at.
Can you elaborate please?
IIRC Flashblock blocked all Flash content when I had it enabled. Am I
missing something?

Try using the Yescript addon, see if it fits your needs.

In Flashblock you can whitelist sites, to allow their use of flash.
For example. mlb.com makes an excellent use of flash for their real time
stats tool. I allow all flash to load their.
My school system's web site is almost all flash. While I seriously
question the wisdom of that, I also allow flash there, since the site is
unusable otherwise.
When you encounter a site where you would want to enable flash, right
click on one of the blocked elements, and choose Allow Flash form this site.

Thanks, but the addon seems to deal with scripts, rather than Flash
content.
In any case, what I'm looking for is a context menu option to deactivate
individual annoying Flash adverts.

Hi Lee
Thanks for your reply.
However, what I'm looking for is a context menu option to deactivate
individual annoying Flash adverts, rather than a whole site/whitelist
approach.

Thanks, but I'm looking for something that kind of works the other way
round, i.e. allow Flash by default with a context menu option to
Ad Block Plus, combined with its companion Element Hiding Helper, would
provide you with that ability.
That's where the Element Hiding Helper comes into play. It doesn't
depend on specific names or even paths.
Thanks for your reply. I had Adblock Plus installed in the past but
uninstalled it a while back because I found it 'overzealous'.
Can you tell me how I would have to configure it to allow everything by
default and use Element Hiding Helper selectively?

Adblock Plus by default already allows everything not in its blacklist.
I still see tons of Flash (and other type of ads), until I block them
manually.
To use Element Hiding Helper, you simply select it from Adblock Plus'
dropdown menu (or use the hotkey), and then select the area of the page
you want to remove (block). There is a preview option, so you can see
if it will interfere with a part of the page you don't want it to.
Thanks for your reply.
I installed Adblock Plus but I don't see the dropdown menu. Should it be
under Tools, or am I looking in the wrong place?

Element Hiding Helper is a different extension (though they work
together), so you have to have them both installed.
That said, Adblock Plus should have placed an ABP icon (looks like a
stop sign) in Firefox, and that's where you access the dropdown menu.
If you don't see the dropdown menu because you have the drop down indicator
suppressed, simply right-click on the icon to get the menu.
Thanks - I can see the ABP icon in the Add-ons window, but not anywhere
else =-O

Thanks, but I'm not aware of having the drop down indicator suppressed
(in fact I don't even know what the drop down indicator is and where/how
to suppress it :-[ ), and in any case, I can't see the ABP icon :-(

Look in View, Toolbars. Make sure the Navigation Bar is checked. Select
Customize. Drag ABP onto the Navigation Bar.
Also, from ABP Help:
How can I put the Adblock Plus icon on my toolbar?
Usually this icon is added automatically the first time you install
Adblock Plus, but maybe it was removed somehow afterwards. In Firefox
you can customize the toolbar, simply right-click on the toolbar and
choose Customize. A window with icons will open, Adblock Plus icon
should be one of them. Drag it with the mouse into the toolbar and place
it where you want it to be. You can also reorder the toolbar icons by
dragging them while the customization window is open.
Try this: Right-click somewhere in your icon bar, and click on
Customize. If it's in there, just drag it somewhere to your icon bar.
If it's not in there, and not already in your icon bar, then I'm lost.
I've installed Adblock Plus in numerous FF and TB installations, and
never had to do that, so that's the only thing I can think of. It's
always installed its icon by default for me.
Maybe uninstall and re-install it?
Thanks for you reply. The Navigation Toolbar wasn't checked. I checked
it and the ABP icon is there alright.
However, I don't really want/need the Navigation Toolbar, but I managed
to drag the ABP icon from the Navigation Bar into my main toolbar 8-)

Tools -> Addons -> Extensions -> right click on the
"Adblock Plus" extension and click on options then again
on Options (tab)
(probably see Adblock options in your Tools menu as well)
Choose either or both
Show in Toolbar
Show in Status bar
Did you visit the author's home page for the extension
http://adblockplus.org/en/
authors are often more likely to tell you how to use on their own pages
than on the Addons page. Some of that should be right on the addon page,
but that is more of a problem with AMO format presentation rather than the author
Splendid, thank you.

You're welcome. That's a great combo there.
You might also want to be sure and subscribe to one of ABP's built-in
subscriptions (from its Options menu). AFAIK, they don't blacklist
stuff unless they consider it rogue; their aim is not to rid the
internet of all advertisements (though you can do that manually, on a
case by case basis).
Again, you're welcome. I take you've tested the awesomeness that is
Element Hiding Helper? That was a great find for me as well, so I'm
happy to recommend it to others. It's like putting Adblock Plus on
steroids. ;)
Yes, I did some initial tests, and it is indeed impressive :-)

Thanks. It seems a subscription to EasyList(USA) is active by default.

On a related note, rather then blocking elements, is there a way to
selectively stop/pause animated images?
I seem to remember that there is a general setting to limit all animated
imgages to one cycle, but can it be done selectively for individual
images (without actually blocking them)?
