An update from 3.0.3 to 3.0.4 was started and proceeded uneventfully until
the message appeared that a reboot was needed to complete the installation.
Before rebooting Windows XP I switched profiles to close down running
programs and then switched back to proceed with the reboot. When the system
came back on, Firefox was not functional. Whenever I tried to start it, the
following message appeared:
"Your computer must be restarted to complete a precious upgrade of Firefox.
Do you want to reboot now?"
If I select to reboot, the next time I try to start Firefox the same message
appears. If I don't reboot, the application doesn't open.
Additionally, when running Norton Disk Doctor with "fix errors" checked, the
following message appears:
"The operating system, or another process, currently has exclusive access to
this drive, or some of its files.
Norton Disk Doctor cannot continue with a repair under these conditions.
…
Norton Disk Doctor can still diagnose this drive if 'Fix errors is
unchecked. …"
On the hard drive, under Programs|Mozilla Firefox, I found 16 files with the
added extension "moz-delete", which are all the same size as the same files
with the same names, but without the "moz-delete" extension except for
xul.dll.moz-delete which is one kb smaller (9,501) than xul.dll (9,502).
There is also one file named "firefox.exe.moz-upgrade" but not the crucial
firefox.exe. I copied firefox.exe from another folder and thus was able to
open the browser. The version number shows that it's still 3.0.3
The install.log file shows 20 pathnames preceded by the string:
"Delayed Delete File (Reboot Required):"
Is there anything I can do to manually complete the upgrade?
