When I visit most web pages, the CPU spikes up to 100% for the several
long seconds it takes to load the page. It wasn't this severe until I
upgraded to FF 3.5.5 (from a much older version, so perhaps the
problem started with a version before 3.5.5). I've disabled flash (it
says shockwave, not adobe) and java as per
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+consumes+a+lot+of+CPU+resources,
but the same CPU spike and long loads persisit. The above link also
says FF's compatibilty mode can burn CPU. The illustration shows
compatiblity mode for Windows 2000. Since I run Windows 2000, can I
assume that FF is perpetually in this mode? I don't actually get
Compatibilty tab as shown. Also, I'm not sure why the CPU usage would
only spike on page-loads if it is constantly in compatibility mode.
Maybe all the compatibility things that are enabled take place on page
loads.

P.S. I posted at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/506684
expecting to see it in this forum, but nada. I was wondering what the
rationale was for maintaining two forums?

Have you tried running in safe mode (there should be a special shortcut
in your Start menu)?

I use Greasemonkey a lot, and I've found certain scripts can cause that
type of behavior.

What is greasemonkey?

The single greatest extension ever made for Firefox. It does so much,
it would be easier for you to look it up than have me try to explain it
to you. It's like potentially thousands of extensions built into one,
which can both be a blessing and a curse, depending on how well those
thousands of Greasemonkey scripts are written (and kept updated). But
you get to choose which scripts you use and on which sites, so the
volume of scripts don't necessarily have to be a drawback.

So I do not have to write the scripts, just pick the ones I want?
URL(s)??

You're not running AVG with its 'linkscanner' active are you?

Correct. Userscripts.org is probably the best source of Greasemonkey
scripts. Even if you install one you later regret, it's simple to
disable (or uninstall) it.

It didn't make any difference. The only extension I have is Throbber
1.1 (up to date), which I tried disabling. The problem persists
despite launching FF in safe mode (funny, but I thought you meant
reboot the computer in safe mode).

No AVG...

Andy,
Safe mode just loads the program without the extensions, and themes.
If the problem is a corrupt, or incorrectly configured prefs.js file,
then the problem will persist. Create a new profile, and test with it.

Jeremy could have saved you a trip back to the store, had he indicated that
if you are you should at least disable it. Disabling in not really sufficient if
you have more than one Firefox profile, and though it does not affect the
other browsers as much as Firefox there have been reports about problems
with other browsers as well. Directions to uninstall "AVG Safe Search"
by reinstalling AVG Free without the "Link Scanner Component" can be
found in the links to the Grisoft's site (avgfree.com) in
Problematic extensions - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

Those that pay to use AVG can turn off the "Link Scanner" in the
AVG options, but reinstalling is needed for those using AVG Free
and the fact that Grisoft continued to include the "Link Scanner
for about a year is really bad for their reputation knowing that
Firefox users have major problems with it -- like not being able
to hit Enter on the location bar for instance is another problem.

BTW The current version is 9.0, but you'll get that when you
reinstall.

Actually it's amazing that you got up to Firefox 3.5.5 at all with the Link Scanner

David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site

Don't forget to use *custom* install,
No Link Scanner,
No Ask toolbar
No other software or toolbar should anything else show up..

Damn thing said I had another Anti vir app and I had to uninstall that.
I tried but could not find it. Have no idea how to re-start the AVG 9
install without doing the d/l again so...
Am going to Avira.

Antivir is a good choice also. Gives you a browser window once a day
offering the paid version, but I just figure that's a good way to know
that it has updated.

Like I said, having it display allows me to know that it's been updated.
I don't consider it a "nag".
