Some webpages provide for downloads of files, through a script
(ie, one clicks a link, and the server than generates the file).
At some point in that, a popup (You have chosen to open ...) appears
asking what to do with the file
(Options: Cancel or 'Save File'). However, this does not allow
me to select *where* I want that file to be saved, it always
goes to a default location...

When i try 'Save Link as ...' on such a link, I can select a
download location, but FF wants to save the result as a *.html
file (likely because the link first leads to a page
managing download queues etc)..

Is there a way to get a 'save file as...' for the popup
'you have chosen to open' dialogue?

Go to "Firefox >> Preferences >> General", and under "Downloads"
select the option "Always ask me where to save files".

Here is a screen-shot of where the settings are. In the
screen-shot, the "Downloads" option still needs to be changed.

Right,

that setting doesn't make that dialogue present a fileselection
dialog. I still get 'Save File' only and it uses the default ~/Downloads
location...

Okay, I'll bite. What is the difference between:

1. Getting a prompt for where to save the download when the "Always
ask me where to save files" option is enabled.

-OR-

2. Using a Save As dialog as a prompt asking you where to save files.

Both will prompt for where to save the download. The only difference
is "Save As" is a prompt you instigate whereas the "Always ask" option
is an automatic "Save As" prompt each time. It is unclear if the OP
wants to always have the "Save As" behavior or just whenever he choose
which means not choosing will do the save to a default location.

So are you saying that you *do* get a prompt of where to save (i.e., a
Save As equivalent dialog) but it is always defaulting to some
standard download path instead of the last path you specified in a
prior download? Or does the Save As dialog you see showing the
standard download path provides no means for selecting a new path?

You sure the server-side script isn't pushing the content of the file
at you when you click on the link instead of digging into a table to
present a path & filename to your web browser?

An example web page and which file download link on it that causes the
problem might help.

Always ask will give you a save as dialog.

It gives you a chance to change the location, and to put it where you
like. If I recall correctly, always ask will display the last location
where you saved a download.

I think the problem is with the site you're trying to download from. An
example would certainly help.
I guess the site doesn't offer a direct link, instead it goes through
some sort of redirect before offering the download.
There are some site offering a direct link though, in case the redirect
fails, for what ever reason. An example is Sourceforge:
"Problems with the download? Please use this direct link, or try another
mirror."
With the direct link you can use 'Save Link as ...'.

I've seen the issue you describe, but I can't recall where. If you
could provide the address of a web page to demonstrate the problem, it
would help. (At the very least, it would get people to stop telling
you about the "always ask" option on the General tab. ;)

I have the feeling that it's a bit idiosyncratic though: I have the
always ask option, and it had always defaulted (yes, from which I can
change) to a location I've saved to in the recent past, but I've
sometimes had the impression it's not been the most _recent_ such
location. I wondered (and asked here, but without stating that I had
"always ask" selected, so the thread wandered thither) if the location
it remembers might be filetype-specific, but I don't save often enough
to have determined anything with any certainty. It has now also occurred
to me that it might remember different (start) locations for the various
kinds of save - File | Save to save a web page, right-click and save for
a link, and just clicking on a link to a type of file (such as .exe or
.zip) that causes a save/cancel box to appear.

Whether that's what the OP wanted or not, it sounds like a good idea; it
would also remove the necessity for the "always ask" option (though the
ability to change the default location would need to be retained).

(Maybe further on this should be redirected to the general 'group.)

I am saying that I get a 'Save/Cancel' dialogue, w/o option of
browsing to where it should save it

Ok, I'll try.

http://www.onlinetvrecorder.com/v2/index.php?go=list&tab=search&preset=myrec

gives me options to download a given recording I made with that service:

see screenshot extract at
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39837205/2013-06-19%2011.22.41%20am.png

The 'Normaler Download' link is to:
http://www.onlinetvrecorder.com/v2/index.php?go=download&tab=download&epg_id=7587746&id=6514235&mode=1

clicking that yields a page in which I am told I am added to a waiting
list, and then it pops up the dialogue shown in

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/39837205/2013-06-19%2011.24.43%20am.png

That dialogue has *no* option for me to select *where* to save the file,
which is what I want.

(yes, in this case I could use the download link the page also offers,
but not all pages offer that, some just start the download and all I get
is that one dialogue that says 'Cancel / Save File'

It looks like I'd need to set up an account with them to try to
reproduce; I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to go through whatever that
entails.

For Binary files, that's the dialog you should get, but after you click
"save" you should be prompted for where to save. Unfortunately, I
don't know why you're not prompted. :(
