I can't find the function "Sort by name" in Favorites when I right click. I
used to have that ability.

I use FFox 3.5.4 with Windows XP.

Is ther another way for this?

tks all

If you see Favorites, it sounds like you are using IE bookmarks in some
manner. So are you actually using Firefox bookmarks. Maybe you
have a Favorites folder that came over from Internet Explorer when you
installed Firefox.

As far as Firefox goes, "Sort by Name" is addressed ONLY from a folder,
and no longer also from an item in a folder. It is addressed by
right-click on a folder so I don't know why you don't see it unless you
are trying it on a bookmark instead of a folder.

The extension to use for sorting bookmarks in Firefox 3 is
SortPlaces
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/9275
It will sort all of your bookmarks in under 3 seconds, so it is specifically
written for Firefox 3. Check out the addons options as to which
of the three main folders you want to sort -- I sort all of my folders, but
I make use of modifying bookmark names when needed and definitely
use bookmark separators. For more information see
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sorting_and_rearranging_bookmarks_-_Firefox

The extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm

Tks David, I added the Sort Places and it worked fine, my bookmark folders
are on top of individual listings like in IE.

One thing though, I think it might have did something to my bookmark
toolbar, I can't get my favorites back on the toolbar, they appear on the
down arrow to right of it but I like frequent ones right on the toolbar,
anyway to correct this?

tks David

If they are the favorites from IE and you want them from
the bookmarks toolbar then rename your Favorite folder
to " Fav" or "_Fav" the first has a preceding space to help
with the sort , or just move it up to the front and then select
the next folder on the bookmarks dropdown, right click and
use Insert Separator. Single drop downs are usually easy
to work, multiple levels of folders are harder to work with
as menus.

You can see what my bookmarks toolbar, more or less looks
like like at
Bookmarks Toolbar Blue/Folders, Red/Bookmarks | userstyles.org
http://userstyles.org/styles/9091
You should notice that without the folder icons, you can display about
twice as many folders if your foldernames are 1-4 characters.

For things you use frequently perhaps a bookmark/bookmarklet
on the bookmarks toolbar, but better as a keyword shortcut
unless it is something you really use a lot or are more likely
to have the hand on the mouse like immediately after a
Google Groups search.

Into the sidebar is easiest for drag and drop. But don't forget
that you are sorting bookmarks with "SortPlaces".

Also use of copy an paste works well to move a bookmark or
subfolder from one folder to another over long distances.

We can drag links from one place to another, but I am not super good
at this yet, I still heavily use the Bookmarks tree (like Favorites
chart) for many places.

One thing I like is when we right click on a link, on one of the top
bars, we can select Properties, then change the name. I have shrunk
text to something I know what this means such as G-News and G-mail, so
more stuff fits sideways. This also means that if I sort the stuff,
it will group based on the abbreviated names I have assigned.
