this morning, i find that mozilla has disabled the skype extension in
firefox. i'm running v3.0.15. there seems to be no way for me to
manually re-enable it. instead, i'm told i should upgrade skype (i'm
running v3.8), and that the version i've been using, which has caused me
absolutely NO problems, whatsoever, is the source of "instability" in
all sorts of areas of firefox usage.

how very microsoftish of mozilla....

as i said, i've had *zero* issues with the skype extension... and, in
fact, on the multiple occasions when i've attempted to upgrade to skype
v4.x, i've had all *kinds* of trouble actually getting that damned thing
to work. i am *deliberately* using v3.8... it's *my* choice. i was
under the impression this was still my computer... so why is mozilla
disabling something that's given me no troubles, "for my protection"??

anyway, i'm hoping someone can tell me some way to get around this
"protection", and re-enable the skype v3.8 plugin. anyone have any ideas?

thanx.

Blocklisting versions older than 3.3.0.3971 was communicated to Skype,
and they didn't object. That add-on was the cause of way too many
crashes and other stability issues. I guess you're an exception. :-)

If the [Enable] button is disabled, it should be re-enabled soon. Just
wait for your installation of Firefox to get the latest version of the
blocklist (It checks once a day).

In the end, I strongly encourage you to update Skype anyway. If you're
experiencing any problems after upgrading, I'm sure the folks at Skype
support would be willing to help.

well, i *do* hear quite often from my wife how exceptional i am... ;)

seriously, i have had no troubles, never knew there was any such
problem w.r.t. the plug-in, and i'm no casual user... i've typically got
2 or 3 windows open with from 8 to 15 tabs in each. (i'm a site
developer and software engineer, with a short attention span! =) the
only complaint i have about FF is that i have to restart it at least
once a day, 'cuz it's eating memory. probably due to one of the 20 or
so plugins i use, but i've never been irked enough to try to figure out
which. certainly wasn't the skype add-in, though!

well, that *is* good news. i just want it back the way i'd had it...

maybe 4.1 is an improvement, but v4.0 was an absolute festival of
horrors for me, on the several occasions i'd tried installing it. i'd
love to be able to use it, looks like it's got multiple cool new
features, but i just don't have the time to invest in dealing with it.

thanks so much for your response, Chris!

Or, there is an alternative: tokbox.com. Requires no software to update
or FF extension. Likely that you will prefer it to Skyoe anyway. :-)

Tokbox is certainly NOT an alternative to Skype. It has no ability to
call phones, either for free or for fee!

I agree with Chris: newer versions of Skype have many desirable
features, and the FF Skype plug-in has always been notoriously buggy.
Sometimes, the problems the plug-in causes aren't obvious, such as when
Google Maps doesn't work properly: there's nothing to indicate that the
problem is related to the Skype plug-in.
