When you get tired of the icons, you can must do two things. First you
need to stop new icons from being added. In the location window, enter
"about.config" then locate and toggle the following two entries from
true to false.
browser.chrome.favicons false
browser.chrome.site_icons false
Then add the following integer entry
browser.chrome.load_toolbar_icons 0
The second part is both optional and tricky and must be done while
Firefox is not running. But I can think of three choices. If you
so choose, you can remove the icons from your bookmarks.html. Or,
if you find it easier, you can simply remove (delete) the polluted
entries from the file. I chose to remove the icons from the file
because it was more exciting. (I suggest making a backup copy of
bookmarks.html before editing it.) Here is an example of a single
(polluted) bookmark from bookmarks.html. My example is 2042
characters. You will note that all bookmarks start with <DT><A and
end with </A>. When you start editing the file, lines that are much
longer than other lines will be easy to recognize. Each bookmark is
on one line. To get it into this email, I had to fold it...

Search for ICON=" and delete everything (including the ICON= part) from
there to the next double quote (ICON="..."). At this point, you can
close the file and run Firefox to see that everything is OK. Then you
can repeat for as many times as ICON="..." occurs and you are done.
I mentioned that I could think of three choices. The last choice is to
simply delete bookmarks.html and bookmarks.bak and empty directory
bookmarkbackups (or move them). I believe Firefox will create an empty
bookmarks.html file when you start it. (If I am wrong about this,
somebody will correct me.)

Pete,
I believe you are correct. I believe the plain sheet is the symbol for
a missing icon.
If nothing else, the icons bloat your bookmarks.html file.

Pete,
The icons that you see are held within each respective bookmark.
I presume that the icons are collected when the bookmarks are created.
After collecting a few dozen icons, the bookmarks.html file was becoming
bloated. When I recognized the bloat, I chose to disable further
collection, since each icon occupies almost 2000 bytes.
umm... I also deleted the icons from their respective bookmarks.
HTH,
Charles
