Same experience here. While gwtc uses a hosts file, I use AdBlock Plus
with Filterset.G & the Filterset.G Updater extension. I find that
combination works for me and doesn't block anything I need to see.

I prefer the cited page to adblock. You may find that you need to
"disable" some entries from time to time (because you want to see
particular blocked pages).

Adblock Plus 0.7 [1] lets you enable and disable filters.

I was going to suggest editing the Hosts file but... ;-) my XP doesn't
seem to have one... :-(
I had quite a large file (imported) with WIN 98SE....

Since I sent the OP I have experimented a little and find that the *Neil*
Jenkins tweak works better than either Adblock or Adblock Plus in getting
rid, not only of static ads, but also the moving ads in a page like this
http://www.sky.com/skynews/home/0,,,00.html

At least the first part of the list is easily converted into element
hiding rules for Adblock Plus 0.7
(http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/filters.html#elemhide_css). It won't
change anything substantially but make the list easier to access and
manage. But I think this list is pretty outdated, isn't it?
In case somebody wants to try it, you can copy the following rules and
paste them into the filter list in Adblock Plus Preferences:
