A new dawning out there?

There is an article [1] "Microsoft ffnet PST-Datei" at silicon.de which
reports about a change at Microsoft to open the file format. And it
seems to allow 'unlimited' access without having installed Outlook!

A new era??

<http://blogs.msdn.com/interoperability/archive/2009/10/26/roadmap-for-outlook-personal-folders-pst-documentation.aspx>
is the official announcement. That doesn't mean that the specification
is yet released:
"We plan to release the .pst specification to the general public in the
first half of 2010."

I don't think anything can be said until the specification comes
out--not all of MS's specification are easily usable (think OOXML).
