At the Community Builders meetup last week, it was decided to move discussions about community building to a dedicated mailing list. More information about that list is at

https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/community-building

There was general agreement that the role of this Mozillians forum as a place for community building discussions was not clear and that we would be better served by migrating to a new list.

Unlike mozillians and most of our public lists, this list doesn't seem
to be available as a newsgroup news.mozilla.org.

Does this mean mozillians list will be closed?

mozillians -- For discussions about how to grow Mozilla and bring in
new contributors.

Not necessarily.

As per David's email, community builders in Toronto agreed that to avoid any confusion, discussions about how to grow Mozilla and bring in new contributors should logically happen on a "Community Building" mailing list. That does not mean the "Mozillians" mailing list should be closed, it just means that the "Mozillians" mailing list should NOT be the dedicated place to discuss community building. If we end up not finding a use for a "mozillians" mailing list, then yes, it should be closed in my opinion.

Yes, that's my point, mozillians was for community building, if we move
that to the new list, I see no point of having the mozillians list open ;)

Yes, the community-building list right now is just a mailman list. If we want to have it be a list-newsgroup-Google Group combination like other forums, we can ask IT to help with that.

This is worth discussing. There may still be a role for the list.

I am happy to have the list with the clear name and purpose. I think for
the most part Mozillians has been used for updates on the website project
and tools.

Btw, I heard someone mention that we might move away from Mozillians, and I
hope not, because I think that term is a great way to distinguish the
business entities and the community of people. I am a Mozillian, a citizen
of Mozilla. Mozillians are meeting in June to discuss Mozilla's future. I
think it makes it clear that it's not just a company meeting, vs Mozilla is
meeting to discuss its future.

So a bit of a tangeant, but to that end, I hope we don't lose the
Mozillians list as well. Maybe if it's not going to be used for the site
project it could be used as a sort of catch-all - not sure where to post
it? have a crazy idea you want to get some feedback on before you actually
propose it to the appropriate team? Mozillians!

That would be great because that's the only public mozilla list I don't
have in my newsreader :)

I agree that the term Mozillian is great and I wouldn't want to move away from that.

The problem with having a Mozillians list though is that right now there are two of them and it causes some confusion.

One of the Mozillians list is this public forum and the other is the people in the Mozillians.org directory that can be contacted for project-wide communications.

This confusion is one of the reasons I think this list never gained the critical mass for discussions -- some people thought that by posting here they would be contacting everyone in the directory.

It doesn't work like that. They have to be set up that way from the
beginning. If you want a properly gatewayed group, you'll need to start
again :-|

That's why the top of
https://www.mozilla.org/about/forums/
says:

"If you think a new Mozilla discussion forum is needed, file a bug (pick
'Standard Discussion Forum') and we'll get right on it. It's not a
complicated process. Please don't just go and set up a plain Google
Group or similar thing, as not everyone finds it convenient to read
groups on the web."
