Hi,

It has been a little while since we had any news about the browser
ballot - I wanted to give everyone an update about what I've been doing
and ask for some help.

==Status==

Right now, the status is the the European Commission had asked
"interested parties" (which includes Mozilla) for comments and the
deadline for those was a couple of weeks ago. The final input is (I
understand) confidential, but a lot of the thinking was inspired by
Jenny Boriss' blog posts on how to make the ballot better. (see
http://jboriss.wordpress.com/ ).

Now, we are waiting to hear if / when the ballot will go live - we know
that we have at least 8 weeks from the European Commission accepting the
proposal to the ballot going live, so we are now working on readiness.
I have been testing different renderings of the Firefox logo with a
market research company, and doing some more background research on what
matters to IE users.

==Can You Help?==

I am also working on a landing page for Internet Explorer users along
with John Slater. This is for people who click "learn more" about
Firefox. And I could definitely use some help. One thing that it would
be great to use would be a couple of quotations from a well known and
respected publication, media outlet or public figure in each country.
If you know of any helpful product reviews or statements published in
these countries:

Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Liechtenstein
Latvia
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
United Kingdom

(this is the European Economic Area - EU plus Norway and Iceland).

Please could you forward them to me, highlighting the best quote
(ideally, translating or explaining it too)! Especially reviews of
Firefox 3.5 or other articles published this year are good.

I will be looking myself in the meantime.

Many thanks!

Patrick

Let me start with some silly question - Are the browser ballot page is about
to get translated to every language, and by whom? Because if Microsoft
control the server and are the only one responsible for translations -
different languages may get better or worse translations. And what about
people who get Windows installed by default in English while they are in
European territories beside UK? (and as for UK, please remember that they
will prefer not to see the en-us texts)

Hi,

The ballot page, which will appear in Windows, will be implemented by
Microsoft, but on the last version of the proposal, each browser
producer could write 2 sentences about their browser, and we will
provide localisations ourselves.

The language that the ballot appears in will be determined by the
language perference of the user in Internet Explorer - which seems
reasonable.

The content mention below - specific quotes - would be on a site hosted
by Mozilla...if users click on "learn more" in the ballot, they would
visit this site.

-the language they see in the ballot will depend on the preference they
have in IE. We will certainly localise to en-GB for the UK (and as the
default for English in Europe I expect), although I tend to think that
the impact of presenting en-US texts to a British audience is not too
severe: for example, a large number of Firefox users in the UK have
their language preference set to en-US, or to en, which will often
default to en-US.

p.s. Tomer - great question, thank you. I realise that in a lot of
countries, Windows ships in English: important to clarify this!

If it's the language choice they made in IE that we are going to use, then that could differ from the language their version of windows is in.

Note that there are many more languages spoken within the EEA than the official languages from the composing countries. Think of regional languages and immigrant languages, like Catalan, Basque, Welsh, Frisian, Turkish, Arab, Serbian, Russian, Albanian, Chinese, etc... We should really try to cover as many as we can.

Can we get a list of languages Firefox is used in within the EEA?

As for albanian and italian (this last one you might have already solved), I could give ya a hand, I'm pretty competent. Just avoid using me in the informatics part, for I'm an ignorant - I would be an excellent user, but understand nothing from virtual creation.

Hi Otto,

I did this study a little while ago. My conclusion is that any material
that we can collect is going to be useful, but in order to prioritise,
if we cover these languges:

English
German
French
Italian
Spanish
Dutch
Polish
Swedish
Romanian
Danish
Catalan
Portuguese

I believe we will cover about 90% of Internet Explorer users in the EEA.

Attached is the usage by locale in EEA countries. Only Russian and
Turkish of non-native locales were represented.

regards

Patrick

...of course, the attachment does not come through. I have it in a
horrible pdf format here:
