Now that Google Reader is being shut down, I think it's a great
opportunity for a blog post/facebook status about the web feed reader
options at Mozilla.
* explain live bookmarks
* list extensions for Firefox
* include how set up an web feed account in Thunderbird
I don't know of any stand-alone RSS readers built on gecko, but if there
are, list them too.

Good idea!
The social team has already posted about the feedly add-on for Firefox on the @firefox account (thanks social team! This info actually stopped by google reader-related panic attacks). I think it was posted on Thursday.
I would also wager that there's a blog like you've described in the works, but I'll let the social team chime in on that.

We should at the same time recommend one of the extensions that puts the
RSS button back in the URL bar. It's a must for me!

Yep, there's a blog post scheduled on Feedly coming this week.
The product marketing team is also following up on live bookmarks, etc.
