Hey There,

I'd like to propose that we add a new mozilla.dev.mobile newsgroup. See
(http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/schrep/archives/2007/10/mozilla_and_mobile.html)
for why :-). Any thoughts/concerns/alternative suggestions? What's
the process adding new newsgroups?

Best,

Schrep

IIUC, the procedure to have a new newsgroup be created consists of opening an
"enhancement" bug at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ in product "mozilla.org",
for component "Newsgroups".

Best regards,
Tony.

faculty played instead of the students, and even more interesting if
the trustees played. There would be a great increase in broken arms,
legs, and necks, and simultaneously an appreciable diminution in the
loss to humanity.

One alternative, if you're looking, is to host the mobile discussion
wherever the Mozilla2 discussion will be held (mozilla.dev.platform?)
since at least initially the two will be sharing requirements pretty
heavily.

Once the traffic for mobile becomes enough of a noise burden to split
it off from mozilla.dev.platform, we can do that.

Tony outlined the process quite well, but I think it can take a few
weeks for the Google Group to appear and start working. justdave
might know more :)

cheers,

You just need to file a bug under "mozilla.org" :: "Newsgroups"
requesting the creation of the group. Gerv will decide if the newsgroup
is needed/wanted, and if it is ok, he will reassign to justdave for
creation. justdave will then work with Giganews and Google to get
the newsgroup all set up. Total process time is usually a week or so,
but it can be slower or faster depending on all the parties involved.

Getting it up is one thing, getting it working is a totally other. We
went through the dance a few times now for locale-specific l10n
newsgroups, and it's a consecutive ticket filing and reopening thing,
sadly. I'm on the halfway sunny side of that street, I just reopen our
bug. Justdave then goes and files tickets on our partners.

We already have mda.minimo: if we're going to create a mobile group I
suggest we remove that one.

Personally I don't think that we need a separate mobile newsgroup right now:
it's still a small audience and we could carry on that discussion
effectively in md.platform until there's too much traffic.

You had better comment on bug 399282 [1], which is a request to create
mozilla.dev.platforms.mobile. As far as I can see, it has already been
created.

As of a couple weeks ago, the Google end is now automated. When we
create a new newsgroup on our end, it'll automatically show up on
Google shortly after midnight Pacific the next morning. We still have
to open tickets with Giganews, though I'm hearing rumors that they
might take advantage of the same API to automate their end as well one
of these days. They usually have only a day or so turnaround anyway.
