Peter, you need to find yourself a Usenet server that carries that group.

It may cost you to actually subscribe to a Usenet server, although there
are still free news servers as well. Note that on the two free Usenet
servers I use, there is no listing for melbpc.computers or even
alt.melbpc.computers.

Then, in Thunderbird, you need to set up a news account for the Usenet
server, then, on this news account, you need to subscribe to the
required group and then download the messages.

Are you sure about the title of the group?? Google Groups does not carry
a group of that name. Maybe you should have a look at
http://www.melbpc.org.au/

No such newsgroup exists at Giganews, which claims to have the most
newsgroups (and which still carries very many alt.* groups).

Go to Mozdev at <http://www.mozdev.org/> for quick access to
extensions for Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, and other
Mozilla-related applications. You can access Mozdev much
more quickly than you can Mozilla Add-Ons.
