I use the wine that came with google earth/Picasa to run Notepad, but haven't
tried running anything more ambitious with it. Frankly, it's just too much
trouble.

I keep my XP machine alive (and connected via KVM switch, which is by far the
handiest way to run two or more machines) to run my Canon scanner,
TurboTax/TaxCut software, and the occasional paid survey that actually requires
me to use IE. Besides, the winmachine has sentimental value :-)

I found wine very cranky, so I certainly agree with your comment about
"too much trouble"

Do you use a keyboard combination or OSD to switch, or is it just a
switch on the KVM itself you use? Do you have a tangle of wires on the
floor?

Hit the scroll lock key twice to switch between machines. The entire room is a
tangle of wires, with all our computers, TVs, etc. sharing 4 wall outlets.
That's four individual sockets, not double-sockets. I have no idea how many
extension cords/powerstrips we have, but it's LOTS. We did a tidying up when
we got the bigscreen TV and put maybe 30 pounds of wire in bags in the garage,
but there's more than that left.
The cheap brother laser printer is nice. It has a USB and an ethernet
connection, so it's now possible to print from any of the 5 machines we have
running.

With all that draw (though I wouldn't imagine you have ALL the
electronics drawing AT THE SAME TIME), isn't that a fire hazard, or do
you have a GFI or are the individual sockets on different circuits?
