The new server is hosted by Giganews. Giganews does not support xpat
searches. This error would be normal.

Mmmm. I'm not using Giganews. I'm connecting TBird to
"news.mozilla.org". That should be the mozilla NNTP server, NOT
Giganews, correct?

That is the mozilla NNTP server, which is now hosted by Giganews. You're
not using Giganews's service as such, but the fact that they are hosting
the Mozilla server now means it doesn't support XPAT (apparently - I'm
just going on the previous post).
If that still doesn't make sense, it may be easier to answer just by
saying that the new Mozilla NNTP server doesn't support XPAT.

This is progress?
A feature that I could use in the past on n.p.m groups is no longer
available? I CAN'T search message subjects anymore.
So with the new NNTP hosting, we can't use our mozilla products the
their fullest advantage? Sounds like I'm visiting some Microsoft site.

redundant note: attempted xpat search in xnews gives msg "501 xpat not supported".
but this seems like a decent place to note that xnews needed something like stunnel, which i never got working, to access
secnews.. netscape, while the new moz news is accessible because it's "normal"
i also see you (chris) included an xnews setup page (it's very simple, but still it's) nice to see. (thanks, since xnews is the
*overall* best newsreader i've yet tried (on win only, so far))

It is progress, in as much as the groups are better organised, and the
Mozilla folks have more influence over what happens. The previous server
was hosted by AOL/Netscape and is only up and running because nobody has
got around to pulling the plug.

I got xnews working on secnews via stunnel with no problem, using Windows.
Its funny, I remember trying to set up stunnel a few years ago, and
having trouble doing it, but this time it was bone simple. Go figure. ;)

Stunnel is a pretty simple thing. While there have been new versions, I
don't think it worked all that differently.
