At Thursday's Grow Mozilla meeting, I was introduced to idea of "conversion points" - sort of like milestones for contributors who are increasing their contributions. The Developer Documentation team has created a path, and I think it'd be interesting to create a 'conversion points' path for evangelism reps as well as for Dev Derby participants.

John, I thought you might be interested in exploring this - i had the idea as I've been thinking about Alvaro, a dev derby submitter, who became a winner, and has now gone on to become a lightning talk presenter/evangelist for the Derby. I wonder if you'd like to define a path on this wiki page. Also, becoming a Dev Derby judge could represent another conversion point. Would value more feedback on this idea:

Also, Shez, Christian, everyone - it would be interesting to think about Evangelism reps in these terms - as a means of recognizing contributors, but also as a way of beginning to measure participation and our own Grow Mozilla efforts more effectively...

thanks! Havi

I really like the idea. Gamification can be very powerful. Here's hoping
this takes off.

I shared my thoughts on goals for the Derby. Let me know what you think.

I also wanted to point out that while I love blue sky thinking, I also
love moving from that to the simplest solution possible (possibly
because there isn't much blue sky here in Rochester).

It seems that it could take a while to get a game system like this off
the ground. For the time being, what if each project listed here
maintained a contributor ranking as a simple wiki page, like this:

The way this was discussed in the Grow Mozilla meeting was not for
gamification, but rather for metrics. That is, "conversion points" are
not part of a point system, but rather points in time or activity that
you can say that a contributor is becoming more engaged. Or points where
people tend to get blocked and not become more engaged. We can try to
measure how many people reach each milestone, and use that information
improve our community processes to make them easier.

So, please step back reframe before diving too far down the gamification
rabbit hole. It's possible that there can be a connection, but let's
make sure that what we define make sense from the engagement perspective
before trying to gamify it.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize that.

I still think the gamification approach would be interesting, even as part of another effort.

Adding David Boswell from Grow Mozilla -- would be cool to get his feedback.

This is an interesting thread and John has clearly articulated a conversion path for developer derby contributors that might be useful elsewhere...

When I first heard of this project, my initial thought was that 'points' referred to a game concept. I do think there's a connection btwn the two, especially when the program has to do with participating in a contest or challenge...

Havi, thanks for looping me in.

My initial goal with conversion data is to give us insight into where people want to contribute and how many people are successful and where other people fall away. Over 100 people a day express interest in contributing but we're not growing by 100 contributors each day, so we need information to optimize contribution paths and help more people get through successfully.

Getting visibility into how contributors are moving through the process of making contributions is going to let us do many things though, such as hooking this into a points or badge system.

Another area I'm interested in that applies to the DevDerby is that this will also show us where people run into dead-ends and we can help move them to another path where they can get further involved. It seems that there is only so far someone can go within DevDerby and people may leave if they don't see how else to contribute to Mozilla.

This works both ways too -- there could be project areas, like webdev, that have existing contributors that may be a good audience to reach out to about getting involved in the DevDerby.
