In today's webdev call [1] we discussed awarding open badges for Mozilla
Webdev contributors. Les mentioned his in-progress work on a Mozilla
badges site based on playdoh. [2] The security review bug blocking it is
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=797857

I shared this with David Boswell so he and Emily from foundation might
help push for it. If anyone else thinks it's a good idea, please vote or
comment on the bug.

If anyone missed it from IRC, here's the dev and stage server links:

https://badgus.allizom.org/en-US/

3 cheers for Les!

Very cool to see this happening :)

I just commented about this badging server being a priority for community building work, so hopefully that will help move things forward.

Since we've got a well defined set of contribution steps for webdev projects and an idea of the badges we'd like to offer, it would be great to get a pilot going that could serve as a model that other teams could use to recognize contributions.

Hi All,

We're announcing a series of Moz Webmaker badges this Saturday at Mozfest.
You can see a preview of the Thimble editor with badges enabled at
https://webpagemaker-dev.allizom.org/en-US/

It might make sense to figure out umbrella Mozilla Badges branding now that
we're getting close to launching a few systems.

Chris (McAvoy, I'm on the Open Badges team, and have talked at length with
Les about this stuff...)

Some comments for anyone interested in django-badger:

1) The source and issues are on github, pull requests are always welcome.

https://github.com/lmorchard/django-badger (a reusable django app, home for issues)
https://github.com/lmorchard/badg.us (a playdoh reference site using django-badger)

2) Some ideas I've tossed out there over the past couple of years for badges at mozilla:

* Set up badges.mozilla.org (or badg.us) as a general service, to enable any mozillian to create and award badges. Bug 797857 represents the current status of my latest effort to try to make this happen.

* Incorporate django-badger into mozillians.org to do the above. Might also be interesting to have mozillians.org act as or incorporate a badge backpack.

* Incorporate django-badger into MDN. Award badges from there not only for MDN wiki and demo activity, but for any developer-related activity across the mozilla project.

Do we want to move this to the Mozilla theme (sandstone). If so, I would
love to work on this.

Sure, fork away! I used twitter bootstrap and some cruddy CSS design of my own on badg.us, because I am a horrible no-good designer.

Chris,

It would be great to work together to sync up a webdev badge pilot with other badge projects you're working on.

I talked to Emily about this a few days ago and she was interested in the idea of a webdev badge pilot, so we should probably all talk after you get back from the Festival.

Sounds good David...Emily is awesome. As long as you're in contact with
her, she knows what's up.

just an FYI that there are some landmines around decentralizing badge
definition loosely, within the context of mozilla hosted services and the
mozilla brand in general (tl;dr: badges are user data, and PII by
definition, hence caution or processes are needed; also, mozilla branding
is valuable hence precious).

I'm happy to unpack this after mozfest.

David,

Thanks for flagging those concerns. Happy to talk to you more about it after MozFest. Feel free to follow up once you're back and caught up on things.

David
