I'm not sure if my subject "type-head problem" is the correct term, so
I'll describe the situation and someone correct me if they know a more
accurate term.

What happens is that ever since Firefox4-beta8, I've noticed that when
I'm trying type anything (login to a forum, a Gmail message, etc) I
can type much faster than the characters appear on screen. Even typing
a url (http://yahoo.com, etc), I'll see a significant delay before the
characters appear. This was not the case with beta7 or earlier, only
beta8 has developed this problem. I don't see it with Chrome, which I
am using right now to post this message.

I'm finding this to be a VERY big annoyance. I would go back to using
beta7 just to eliminate this issue, but of course that would defeat
the purpose of being a beta tester.

Has anyone else seen this? Recommend solution?

Candide

The problem could be related to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597627
That one is a blocker and will be fixed in FF4.
Though, if you see some slow down even when typing to the location bar,
the problem could be something quite different.

It would be useful if you could try to find the regression range
using nightly "mozilla-central" builds
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/
and file a bug.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Core

Also, if you use addons, make sure you have the same addons what you had
in b7. Skype's addon for example slows pretty much everything quite a
bit. So better to test with and without the addons.

Thanks for the suggestion, Olli. I went ahead and installed the most
up-to-date nightly build and things have improved a great deal. At
least when I'm typing into Gmail or a forum post, the screen updates
as fast as I can type.

However, there is a noticeable lag when typing in the location bar,
though not as bad as before. I did a little more exploring, and think
I found what is causing that. The problem goes away by choosing this
setting:

Edit-Preferences-Privacy-Location Bar...When using the location bar,
suggest: Nothing

If I choose "History and Bookmarks" or just "Bookmarks" I get the
delay. I prefer just to use "Bookmarks" but this still gives me a
delay. Using "Nothing" as a setting would be a bummer. I suspect that
the size of my bookmark file (which keeps growing) is partly
responsible for the delay. However, I should point out that I use the
exact same bookmark file in Google Chrome and the problem doesn't
exist there. So I would suggest that maybe the developers need to look
at this to find out why Firefox needs so much longer than Chrome to
examine the bookmark file and suggest a URL.

It would be still great if you could try to find the regression range.
Clearly this problem isn't happening for everyone, so trying to
debug it without knowing what caused it is hard.
If you could try different builds from
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/
to find which one is the last build which doesn't have the problem.
