Notes from websites task force meeting on 4/21/11

present: aakash, kairo, liz, clyon, dean, rafael, ozten, david,
chrissie, john, lforrest, ryan, milos

- Abandoned Sites

Ryan will call the next meeting of this working group soon to review
about 10 sites that are up for review. If you are interested in
taking part in this meeting, contact Ryan or reply to this message.

He also plans to follow up with a discussion about what it really
means to expunge data. Chris Lyon mentioned that IT should be looped
in to deal with issues such as data on backup tapes.

- Domain Change

David said that now that the Firefox release is done the domain name
change process is going again with the focus on merging mozilla.org
and mozilla.com and other sites, such as air.mozilla.com, can be dealt
with opportunistically.

There was also a discussion about the general approach to
the .org/.com merge and how it will work with redirects, design,
timing, etc.

- Documenting Website Product Owners

Ryan said the audit of sites and tracking of relevant information is
continuing with a goal to have this done in Q2. The current wiki page
has 66 sites out of the 170+ sites on the Community Directory page.
To help out, feel free to take a site on the directory list and make
an entry on the wiki page.

- Website End of Life Process

Ryan mentioned that this is a living document and when there are
updates we can discuss in the group.

- Universal Tab

John said there was no update here yet, but the plan is to have a
mockup for people to respond to in the next few weeks.

- Web Fonts

John mentioned that he and Sean were rethinking some of their
approach. Sean is exploring using variations of meta for wordmarks
instead of creating a new font. For a font to be used in pages on
headlines and other places they are still considering identifying one
to use or designing a new one from scratch.

- Universal Subtitles

Dean from the Participatory Culture Foundation introduced himself and
gave an overview of Universal Subtitles. There are currently some
technical issues with this that are preventing us from using it on
Mozilla sites that should be resolved soon.

There are also localization workflow issues that need to be looked at
before deploying this widely. Our proposal is to deploy this on one
test page after the technical issues are worked out and work through
any issues with the localization community and then go from there.

- Site Checklist

Ryan mentioned his group is defining processes for new and existing
sites and there will be a brownbag coming up soon.

- Next Meeting

Since this meeting had been pushed back by two weeks because of the
all hands we're going to meet again in two weeks instead of in four
weeks to get back on the regular schedule.
