Notes from Web Site Task Force Meeting on August 26

Present: davidwboswell, michaelverdi, fuzzyfox, jslater, rsnyder,
fligtar, lforrest, jswisher, cylon, jbecerra, liz, kairo

- Common Footer

Julie had a schedule conflict and couldn't make the meeting so we
skipped discussion of legal aspects of a common footer. We talked
about how others may have requirements to add to a common footer, so
other people are welcome to help craft our plans here. FuzzyFox is
working on integration with the Community Map for a footer and will
work on having a demo on a site for the next meeting. John also said
a common footer was one of his top priorities after the current
Firefox site work is completed.

- Domain Name Strategy

David presented the initial domain name strategy proposal -- a plan to
move off of organization-based domains starting with transferring
mozilla.com to mozilla.org/firefox and using the lessons there to
transfer other sites later.

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Websites/Taskforce/Proposals/Domain_Name_Strategy

There was general agreement about moving off of organization-based
domains and starting with mozilla.com. There was a lot of discussion
about how we'll apply this to other sites: there are technical issues
with changing AMO's URL, it's not clear what is best for sites like
SUMO or nightly.mozilla.org (support.firefox.com, mozilla.org/firefox/
support, firefox.mozilla.org/support?), do we want to create a domain
for local sites such as community.mozilla.org, etc.

Dealing with everything at once is too many cans of worms, so we need
to take this incrementally. Janet raised the point though that
dealing with just mozilla.com at first might not raise enough issues
to be very useful. Her suggestion was to slightly expand the scope to
include URLs for SUMO and/or AMO too and also think through some
generic issues relating to sub-domains versus directories. She and
David will talk more about this.

- Web Fonts

We skipped the web fonts proposal since Ned was not at the meeting.

- Meeting Times

There is a conflict with the directors meeting if we hold this meeting
at the last Thursday of each month. Instead of changing the time,
FuzzyFox reasonably suggested meeting every four weeks instead of
every month to avoid the overlap. So the next meeting will be
September 23 at 10 AM pacific.

A proposed agenda for the next meeting was common footer, domain name
update, web fonts and potentially anything else people propose.

I think you'll miss a lot of significant issues unless you also
include Seamonkey. SUMO and AMO present technical difficulties,
but not organizational ones.

Also, do not merely move existing pages from mozilla.com to mozilla.org.
See bug #591648 at
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=591648>. This is NOT a
problem with existing mozilla.org pages but is endemic with mozilla.com
pages.
