MDC, spam, and the good life (?)

So we're having real problems with spammers posting big, long ads on
MDC. As a temporary measure, until we figure out a few things, I've
disabled the ability for new users to register accounts on MDC. I
believe that many if not all of these spammers are using some kind of
bot, which means they may have figured out a way to bypass the captcha
used on the new user registration form. Until we know what's up with
that, this is the only way to control this problem that I can think
of.
