OK, so here's an update:
Editing has been re-enabled, and most (if not all) of the lost pages
have been restored.
The team doesn't know what happened yet. However, they've found the one
place in their code (literally) that removes a page from the database
and put an exception on it so that if it happens again they should get
email with all kinds of information that should help nail down the
problem.
So feel free to work again, and if/when it happens again we'll know!
