Dear localizers of Firefox OS,

Good news! We have updates regarding the schedule and the branches, all
related to the 1.0.1 (the initial) release.

Thanks for your patience and continued efforts to keep your
localizations up-to-date. In a fashion only known to Mozilla, we've
seen over 60 teams opt in for Firefox OS localization over the past
months, with more than 45 actively working on it on a regular basis.
I'm speechless!

We finally have some updates for you, so read on to find out about the
1.0.1 planning and testing (yes, we have phones!).

The v1.0.1 branch (string frozen)
---------------------------------

The v1.0.1 branch targets a small subset of locales for the release in
South America and Central Europe. These locales are (in alphabetical
order of locale code):

Czech, German, Croatian, Hungarian, Polish,
Portuguese (Brazil), Romanian and Spanish.

The v1.0.1 branch is as of this week *string frozen*.

We branched the localization repositories which can be now found at:

https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/gaia-l10n/v1_0_1

The dashboard has been updated as well:

https://l10n.mozilla.org/shipping/dashboard?tree=gaia-v1_0_1

If you're one of these 8 locales, please clone the corresponding
repository from the URL above and update the localization there. The
English strings can be consequently found at:

https://hg.mozilla.org/releases/gaia-l10n/v1_0_1/en-US/

The deadline for the above locales to commit changes to these v1.0.1
repositories is March 31st. There's a good chance we will be given
another window of time to land more l10n fixes sometime in early April,
but please work towards updating your locale by the end of March.

The v1-train branch (no action required; continue with gaia-l10n)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The v1-train branch will at some point become the next release, probably
called 1.1. The localization repositories you have been using up to
this point (gaia-l10n) correspond to v1-train.

https://hg.mozilla.org/gaia-l10n/

All locales that opted in should just continue using these repos (no
changes needed to your local setup). We don't know which locales will
be targeted for the 1.1 release at this point.

The master branch
-----------------

Master is the "next" release and we have no localization repositories to
track it. It's the equivalent of mozilla-central (or mozilla-inbound)
and there are too many unstable changes to the UI to plan an l10n effort
at this time.

Phones!
-------

Yes. We finally got phones. They are a scarce resource, and we only
got 20 of them. In the upcoming days Delphine will contact some of you
and ask for shipping information.

Once you have a device in your hands, we encourage you to put your
primary SIM card in it, switch to your locale and just use it as much as
you can. File bugs and fix translation errors.

We wish we had more devices to give out and we wish we had had them
earlier. Thank you for being patient. We're doing what we can and
eventually, we will make sure every locale has had an opportunity to
dogfood the localization on a real device.

Thanks,
Staś and Axel

Go ahead and land. I don't have any concrete updates on the final
deadline, so for now, it's okay to assume that you can still make
changes.

We will want to go through the regular sign-off process for Firefox OS,
where you specifically mark a changeset as good-to-ship.

I hope to have an update early next week.

Until that happens, please continue the testing & land the fixes.

Thanks,
-stas

ps. Good to hear from you, Fernando! :)

Hi there,

Quick update intended for the people to whom the 20 phones that were shipped, as well as other possessors of Unagis.

I wanted to send out some links that might help you when you encounter bugs.

Here are some example of localization bugs filed for FirefoxOS, so you get a general idea of the main ones already encountered, and also to help you out as an example in filing bugs:

Localization:
* http://bit.ly/171IUEl
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=846060
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=852739

Other than localization (but still b2g bugs):
* http://bit.ly/11fnpwj
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=834115
* https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=862150

Please note (most of you probably already know this): most of you have probably have an Unagi on a v1 build. The problem is that not all strings have been uplifted from v1.0.1 to v1 yet:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=854056

So for the moment, please do not open up bugs if you see untranslated strings.
All other type of bugs - either l10n or others - you can file in Bugzilla.

General rules when filing a bug for l10n (Stas, Pike: please correct me if any of this has changed since):
* if it's specific with the language, then file under the Mozilla
localization and cc: :pike and :stas and me (lebedel.delphine at gmail dot com)
* if it's not specific to the language, file under b2g with the 'l12y'
keyword and cc: :pike and :stas and me
* if you're in doubt, file in b2g with the 'l12y' keyword and cc: :pike
and :stas and me

thanks for your help with this!

Hi Delphine.

Links not working, I guess they're private searches?

I have a bunch of open bugs, but I'll have to check if they still apply
to v1
http://bit.ly/11rbSLr

One for example is already outdated (that string is gone in the current
repository, not sure if you want to close it as fixed)

Oh sure, here you go:

Some examples of b2g Localization bugs

Examples of other kind of b2g bugs

I'll take a look at your links today and can close the outdated bugs if I see some.

thanks Flod!

Another update for those of you who have FirefoxOS phones.

Here is another link if you would like to help out with generally testing your phone and give us some useful feedback:
https://etherpad.mozilla.org/QA-Field-Testing-Request

Please do tell us what kind of SIM card you are using for this testing. A good idea for example would be to open up your own etherpad and send me the link so I can follow which tests you've done and see if there are any issues.

Also, for those of you who use Moztrap: if you have any ideas of Test cases that we could add to Moztrap for the localization section of FirefoxOS, please let us know so we can add them there. There are currently few test cases for l10n and it would be useful to have more.

Another way to help out is to look at the existing test cases under localization of FirefoxOS and see if you can pass the tests.

let me know if you have any questions!

thanks
