Hi everyone:

As we approach Mozilla's mobile browser (aka Fennec) 1.0 release, we
have learned that the Mozilla Labs project, Weave
<http://labs.mozilla.com/weave/>, will make a push for a localized
release around the time of the mobile browser's general availability.

Outside of our Babelzilla community, many of you know that the
l10n-drivers and Mozilla project does not have a *great* infrastructure
for localizing extensions like Weave. (Based on some early comments in
a bug that I reference below, it's probably worth adding that AMO's
collector add-on was completed almost entirely outside of Babelzilla.)

Since late last week, Axel and I have been working with the Weave team
to come up with a manageable process for localizers, inside the Labs Hg
repository, if localization of Weave is something we can provide by late
September (likely date of availability, September 23).

Things we are asking and hoping to relay:

1. Please OPT-IN to this email thread if you would like us to set up
a repository for your locale

* This is the bug that many have seen and where some have
commented: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=512491
* Translations will be stored in the forthcoming repos and packaged
together by the Weave team

2. For an early indication of what needs to be done, the following
directory in Hg contains most of the strings that we think we'll need to
localize

* *Please note: This directory is scary right now! :) These files
are being edited now by the Weave team to reduce the number of
strings necessary for translation*
* http://hg.mozilla.org/labs/weave/file/default/source/chrome/locale/en-US/
* Very early and rough string count is somewhere around 200, which
the Weave team is still reviewing and editing heavily, so it may
be much lower

3. Timeline: We hope to have string freeze by September 10,
providing two long weekends for your work. Localized Weave will be made
available sometime around September 23.

We realize this is not a customary way in which our community has
localized extensions in the past. Apologies for that. But, it seems to
be the best way for the Weave team to manage localizations with all of
us for their work going forward. If you'd like, give us your remarks,
with possible reference to your experience with working on localizing
AMO's Collector add-on, and opt-in if you'd like to work on Weave.

Warm regards,

Seth

de surely wants a repository - we'll clear up internally who will lead
the effort on this add-on but I'm very sure we want to have it.

It's the best way to do this. All extensions coming from inside Mozilla
should be localized this way.

Hi,

I'm not quite sure what Weave is, but if it's initially as small as 200
strings, I can do it. Thus, lt opts in.

es-ES opting in, too. We may use Weave to introduce new member into
the L10n team, although initially I guess I will be doing the commits
myself.

Thanks a lot.

Dear Localizers,

Last week, Seth emailed about localization of the Weave project in
concert with the release of mobile Firefox. Twenty-five teams have
since opted-in to the process, interested in helping out. Sadly, the
Weave developer team delayed the l10n efforts because they are still
going through a major UI cleanup and will not be ready for us in time.
The localization is postponed until further notice. At that time, we'll
re-engage and let you know the status of the l10n side of Weave.

Our apologies,

L10n-drivers
