Hi all,
For localized Fennec, we'd like to make sure we choose a good set of
default search engines for each locale. We'd like to work on choosing
the search providers now in October, in order to be ready for the next
milestone, which according to the plan, will be a localized one.
The guidelines for choosing search engines for Fennec for your locale
can be found at <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Mobile/Productization>.
The en-US defaults are Google (global), Wikipedia (reference), Amazon
(e-commerce), Yahoo (local) and Twitter (social). We'd like to get your
suggestions on good replacements for these engines in your region.
You're welcome, of course, to leave the en-US engines if you feel that
they're relevant and popular in your region, or to go for the same
engines that you've already chosen for desktop Firefox. (You can see
them at
<http://hg.mozilla.org/l10n/l10n-src-verification/file/tip/reference/1.9.2>).
I've filed today 33 bugs about choosing default search engine plug-ins
for localized Fennec. I went off the list of locales that are currently
shown in the dashboard at
<http://l10n.mozilla.org/dashboard/?tree=fennec10x>, which basically is
the same as this one:
<http://mxr.mozilla.org/mobile-browser/source/locales/all-locales>. If
you're not on this list but would like to be, please file a bug in
Fennec > General and cc Axel (l1...@mozilla.com).
You should have got the bugmail already, but in case you haven't, please
find your locale on the tracking bug's dependency list at
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=fennec10-l10n-search&hide_resolved=1>
or in the bugxhibit at
<http://l10n.mozilla.org/~stas/bugxhibit/?qs=choose%20search%20plug-ins%20for%20fennec>.
I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions in these bugs. For now
(i.e. through the end of October), I'd like to focus just on getting the
final list of search engines that you would like to see in Fennec in
your locale. In fact, we're still ironing the technical details of
implementation. Consequently, we won't be doing patches nor landings for
now, and we can't really promise that all suggestions or all locales
will make it for the next milestone(s). But rest assured that we will do
our best.
Thanks for reading and see you in Bugzilla!

If "local" is intended as "find things near my position or near a
place", a Google Maps search plugin could be a good idea. Right now I
can find searchplugins for Google Maps on mycroft.mozdev.org, so it's
technically possible to have one (but I never tried Google Maps on Fennec).
Francesco
Hell Staś and Francesco,
I would suggest a OpenStreetMaps search plugin instead of the Google
Maps one.

Good questions. Stas is out of office for a few days, so he'll pick this
up when he's back.

Sorry for the delay, the e-mail got buried under a pile of unread
messages after I got back from being offline.
Including Yahoo! was the recommendation of the mobile team, and the
rationale was that Yahoo! provides good local search results for North
America, where 'local' is defined as flod defines it ("find things near
my position or near a place").
Personally, I understood that this meant including local.yahoo.com. I
filed <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=528522> to clarify this.
Flod, thanks for bringing this up. I hope that the discussion in this
bug will provide good answers.
Best,
Staś
