Hi Axel, Stas, and all,

AFAIK Firefox 9 will include Twitter search-plugin:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671307
http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/default/browser/locales/en-US/searchplugins/list.txt

I have two question about this:
1. Is there any guide/rule for localizers if we should add it to our
locale too or select other search service?
2. Why default search-plugin will not specify the language?

As for ja, we probably just use twitter, but we should select language
for the locale like:
https://twitter.com/search/firefox%20lang%3Aja
not just:
https://twitter.com/search/firefox

To make this, should we file a bug to add customized (just add lang:ja
keyword) twitter search plugin for ja Firefox?

Thanks.

The bug 671307 is now fixed on aurora (Firefox 8) too.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671307#c46
So I think we localizers probably also want to include the twitter
search into the localized Firefox 8 too.

There is no specific guidelines here (yet). I think it would be best
if all localization teams reviewed this change in en-US and discussed
what their preferred course of action would be. I see a few outcomes:

- don't change anything, social search isn't big in my locale

- copy the plugin as-is, people here use twitter in English anyways
(file a bug just in case)

- add a locale-specific version of the twitter plugin (e.g.
twitter-ja) with the search query including the locale code
(file a bug to get a review)

- add a different social search service which is more popular in my
local than twitter (file a bug to get the permission from the
service provider and a review).

Thoughts? I think this also answers your second question :)

I had a chat with Asa, and he promised a post to frame the discussion here.

Being totally dizzy from my flight, here's the quick round-up:

We're trying to experiment with people search here.

If there may be something better than the plugin we ship in en-US for
your locale, take the time you need to figure that out, and file a bug
about it. CC me, I'll make sure the right folks are on it.

If you want to tweak the twitter search, you'll need a bug, with a
patch, and that patch will need review before it lands. If you're
tweaking twitter and land without prior review, we'll ship your old
locale status. Getting tweaks to the experience in shouldn't be a
problem, but we need to do that right.

If you just want to add twitter like en-US, just add a line with
'twitter' to your list.txt. Don't add the xml. You may want to wait for
Asa to frame the thinking, though. I'll post-hoc review that as part of
the sign-off reviews.

en-US plugin works great with es-AR and I'm waiting to commit the change
to list.txt.
