Is this "mobile phone" or more general "mobile device"?
I know that Fennec runs on more than phones, but the intention here is
quite unclear to me, and I'm too little of a native speaker to know if
"mobile" alone usually means a phone or any mobile device, i.e. even
PDAs, Internet Tablets, possibly netbooks, etc.
I guess other localizers might run into the same question, that's why
I'm asking here.

They might also possibly mean the brand "Mobile" as in Firefox Mobile.
In that case we shouldn't translate, it's unclear indeed. Firefox Mobile
would be better then.
There are more instances where it's unclear in the html-files,
where they also speak of mobile devices.

As for Dutch, I have generally interpreted “Mobile” as an
application name, assuming Fennec is just a working codename. Obvious
exceptions are treated differently of course.

In one case I handled this as follows:
3977 #: controllers/components/hub.php:226
3978 msgctxt "devhub-external-english"
3979 msgid "Designing User Interfaces for Mobile"
3980 msgstr "Benutzerschnittstellen fr mobile Gerte entwerfen"
I think "mobile" is clearly not only mobile phones.

(Also, that would mean I translated it wrong and I shall change the
German L10n to treat Mobile as a name).

The mobile browser that has been code-named "Fennec" is going to be
publicly marketed as Firefox. This is Firefox on a mobile device, make
no mistake about that. (It's built on the 1.9.2 Gecko branch and has
all the functionality of the most modern browsers, including html 5
support.) That is how John Lilly (Mozilla CEO) and Jay Sullivan (Mobile
team leader) are referring it when they do their press interviews.
So, as Wil and Mark say, "Mobile" would/could refer to Firefox.
If you have continued questions on this localization effort, please
please continue to ask here! :) We can also ask Caitlin Looney
(clooney at mozilla com) who is the marketing manager for the Fennec
project.

Yes, that is my interpretation after chatting several times in product
delivery-style meetings. If there is a translation of the word "mobile"
that implies a smart-phone-mobile-style-device, then use that word. I
think it is fair to say that in English, when referring to Firefox
mobile, it implies that Firefox can run on a smart phone like the Nokia
N900.
I hope that makes sense.
