Hi and happy new year to everyone,

I've been asked about why mozilla.org site is still in English and I
don't have enough information to answer this person. I know that this
localization is (was?) planned but I have no idea about when this is
going to be done.

Anyone could update me?

Regards.

AFAIK, we are working on a solution to make the site localizable in the
future, but we are not there yet.

The dev.mozilla-org groups is better suited for mozilla.org discussions,
so I'm cross-posting there (forgive not setting a followup, but I think
a further reply might be wanted in both groups).

The short answer is that we very much want to localize mozilla.org and
have been talking with the l10n drivers about how to do that.

For now, we are able to host localized pages and are doing that for
the Mozilla Manifesto, but we don't have a good way of handling
localized content across the site.

http://www.mozilla.org/about/manifesto

I hope to have this fixed early this year. In the meantime, I'm happy
to work with people on getting the localization process started for
other pages on the site. I put a wiki page up that lists the pages I
think are good localization candidates.

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla.org/Localization_wishlist

Feel free to comment on that or write back if you're interested in
helping get www.mozilla.org localized.

Thanks,
David

I suppose most of us are interested. How are these pages localized? Via
svn and html files or via a .po file?

Right now pages are localized through SVN and HTML. Please feel free
to localize a page, attach it to the relevant bug and I'll add it to
the site. Longer term we'll move to a system that fits better with
the existing web l10n workflow.

You can find bugs for the relevant pages at

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla.org/Localization_wishlist

To follow up on this, I've received several pages of new localized
content from Cedric and Edo this week and wanted to thank them. I
haven't posted everything they sent me, but you can see the new French
and Croatian versions of the Mission page at

http://www.mozilla.org/about/mission.fr.html

http://www.mozilla.org/about/mission.hr.html

If anyone else is interested in adding new Mission page localizations
or localizing other pages, let me know.

Thanks,
David

I'd like to do that for sq locale, provided that we will have a system
for managing all post-translating tasks (submitting and such)

cheers

Great. For now there the system is just me checking in files that you
add to bugs or that you send me, but we can work toward getting
interested localizers commit access. Longer term, we should move to
the same system where each localizer has their own locale repository
instead of having everything all put together. If you do want to
localize any pages now, I'll be happy to help get them posted.

I definitely agree with this.

But currently, the localized pages are useless: when I type
www.mozilla.org, I can only see the English page and no way to go on the
localized pages.

Yes, I do. Where do I find the original pages?

We've been working on this as well. Milos just created a patch on
staging that adds a language picker to the footer of the Manifesto
pages. You can see that at:

http://www-stage.mozilla.org/about/manifesto.en.html

You can follow the progress of this in

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521704

All of the relevant information should be on the following page:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozilla.org/Localization_wishlist

There are links to the pages on the site, links to the pages in the
SVN repository and bugs for each pages that you can attach localized
pages to.

If there is anything that would be helpful that's not included there,
feel free to edit the page or let me know and I'll update it.

Is the plan to show content based on the language of the browser? So
someone using a French Firefox would get the French Mission document by
default?

If not then discoverability of the language picker is pretty poor (would
be much better above the fold.)

If that's best practice for Mozilla's localized sites, then that's
what I'd like to do on mozilla.org. Patches welcome :)

For the placement of the language picker I just followed the example
of other localized sites, so this is probably a larger discussion if
discoverability there in general is low.
