about:home buttons don't work in new XUL browser window

I'm creating an addon that generates a new XUL browser window (not using the built-in Firefox browser tabs). However, when I go to about:home in that new window, non of the launcher buttons work, and the search doesn't function either.. All of the other about:XXX URLs work. We have run into a few problems with js-ctypes and loading of a DLL. First off we have verified that the DLL works and all methods are called properly. But the problem appears to be the load time of the library.

On a side note… this is a pure “C” DLL/LIB that will be compiled on the Mac/Linux. Very fast and light weight. (no MFC or any other M$ bloat)

On load event of a Firefox window I start listening for the "browser-delayed-startup-finis hed" notification, then I run a function that includes a call of getVisibleEngines({ }) of nsIBrowserSearchService. This call still sometimes fails, unless it is called after a delay.

Is there a less ugly way of doing this than using a delay?

Detect Firefox main menubar is showing AND focused?

I need to detect if the main menubar is showing and focused. Basically, if a user presses the 'Alt' key, the main menubar will show up (if previously hidden) and becomes the keyboard focus such that if user presses 'f', the File menu will open.

The issue is, I couldn't find out any API calls/properties/attributes/ac tiveElement/focusedElement of the menubar or toolbar or document or commandDispatcher that would let me know that menubar is now showing and is the focus of the keyboard events.

cfx testall failing, clean installation
