getting time elapsed

Is there a way to keep track of the current time elapsed whilst using
the setTimeout function. Say i have a setTimeout(window.open, 300000)
(i.e. opens a new window after 5 minutes) and the user leaves the page
at a random time, say 3 minutes 24 seconds, is there a way to find this
time and store it using the GM_setValue method?
