An Firefox extension that calls Java is here:
http://code.google.com/p/openinfocard/source/browse/trunk/firefox/chrome/infocard/content/tokenissuerXul.js

That javascript file is included in a XUL window here:
http://code.google.com/p/openinfocard/source/browse/trunk/firefox/chrome/infocard/content/cardManager.xul#51

You need to include the javascript from a chrome: URL for it to have the needed permissions.
This should work in Thunderbird too.
