Hello.

Is there a reason why Thunderbird doesn't put downloaded mails in local
settings\appdata?

The default place is by default included in roaming profiles, and that
is a problem for corporates (not huge problem, we can leave that
particular directory outside of roaming, but it still requires extra
tweaking in roaming settings. Problem is that that change also leaves
out profile settings, and not just downloaded mails and news).

OTOH while home users do not use roaming profiles, they also usually do
not have multiple machines with POP3 accounts with settings that doesn't
leave messages at the server.

So: feature change request: put Thunderbird mails inside local
settings\appdata instead of appdata. Also search database should go there.

This appears to be
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=517425>. In the future,
please do at least a very quick search of Bugzilla before posting here
(I found this bug simply by typing "appdata" into the front page of
Bugzilla).

Thanks,
Dan

I didn't consider this as bug, so it didn't occurred to me that someone
could have filed a bug for this. I just thought that this is some kind
of design choice, and IMHO discussion about design and features do not
belong to same category as bugs.

I'll review what has been said there.

Our understanding of a "bug" is a bit broader in most cases. For "us"
every issue, enhancement request or actual software error is a bug,
not just the latter.

Everything is a bug :) Features are bugs, as well ;)

Use redirected folders and the problem goes away. :)

This should only apply to IMAP messages, since they are stored on the
server. But the problem of losing custom message pane column view
changes (because these are stored in the .msf files) is a significant one.

POP messages should *not* go into local settings by default. If a user
has set it to 'leave messages on server', then they can manually move
the location to local settings, but it should not be the default imo.

That one is about storing temporary data in local settings, which I
agree with. Imo, in most use cases I think POP messages should not be
considered 'temporary' data, and should not therefore be stored in local
settings.

What is "custom message pane column view" ?

I know what message panel is (or at least I think I know), but "custom
column view" is something I don't understand. AFAIK message panel is
message panel, it can't be modified in any way (except height of it).
