Hello,
just noticed there is a hidden item included in the card-item
definition, the <category>.
It's NOT displayed with the AB-UI, so I'm not sure how it's used.
Can anyone give a reference where I can find more infos about usage etc
...?

Anybody out there ?????????

Think there are some expertized people already worked with those
internal items like 'category' ... for palm sync ...

My searches on different source like http://lxr.mozilla.org/mailnews/
didn't gave a clear picture!

Is 'category' FREE to be used by what even one thinks about????

I don't think this is used for palm sync - we use categoryId for Palm
"categories".

Perhaps there's an ldif attribute called category that we're faithfully
maintaining.

See
http://lxr.mozilla.org/mailnews/source/mailnews/addrbook/src/nsAbCardProperty.cpp#549

and
http://lxr.mozilla.org/mailnews/source/mailnews/addrbook/src/nsAddressBook.cpp#166

Thanks David!

Good to know this thread is read and worked on .... sorry for being
sarcastic ;>

Those two links I know and their existence was what initiated my through
to use the TB/AB 'category'-item.

Unfortunately all my searching for a plausible usage of that ended in
the nirwana!? Thought it could be palmsync (you said not), about LDIF I
can't find any deeper infos about a usage ...

.... there MUST be a functionality why it was implemented !??

Anyone how has more knowledge????

I had a quick dig, the category item seems to have appeared during
implementation of this bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142845

Why or what it is intended for doesn't seem to be specified. Should
probably really be used for something or removed.

On a first look I can't see 'category' on that mentioned bug-page!??

Nevertheless you said "Should probably really be used for something or
removed." ... I'm voting for "be used for something" ... which is:

Use 'category' similar to what eg. Outlook and MS Mobile/Contacts is doing:
-- assign codings to contacts
-- sort by those categories
-- select cards by category
-- ... etc

I have a modification for the "morecols"-XPI originally implemented by
"Paolo KAOSMOS" see at http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html

This will add a field for 'categories' to be display on card-tab4
'display other items'.
(By the way I added also 'lastModifiedDate' .. this works well, also
it's access-mode is maybe not very clean ... see my other posting).

Also I'm working on a small extension for user-configurable definition
to export/copy AB-cards or AB-books. This one can also uses 'category'
as a filter to output only specific cards.

ON a long run there are different XPI-packages out there for syncing
TB/AB with eg. PALM or MS Mobile/Contacts. Think the category should
have a well defined 'usage' for all those packages!!

Mark,
coming back to your last statement

Hello Mark,
any news about this one? Is there anything we can push to get it as a
"Standard" Addressbook item??

See also https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364152

The only way to get this as a standard address book item at the moment
is to get someone to implement it or supply some patches that would do that.

I'm one of the few people that actively work on the address book but my
current projects are unlikely to touch that area for a while as I am
currently focussing what little time I have on improving the ldap
implementation and there's other areas that need attention (e.g. general
bug fixing and backend improvements).

Having said that, if anyone wants to work on or supply a patch, then I'm
happy to give comments or review it as that generally takes a lot less
time than writing it in the first place.

Thanks Mark,
OK I fully respect all the work you folk are doing ... and once more
many THANKS to you and the whole team.

If I had enough background I would try to work on that, but I expect I
would harm it more than get a good result out of it! ;>

But I it would also be a little goody not having changed the status of
the AB-category-item fe. by deleting from code or using it for something
else.
So the first point would be : how to make sure the AB-item stays and
will not be used for something else?

How about having the address book as a separate application and
potentially separating the bookmarks application as well?
