LDAP Address Books work great until you try to convert to another, then it's version to version between mail clients - a job that will never get done.

Just some of the legacy aps have 600+ names for similar, but not exact meta data. see: http://www.rustprivacy.org/meta/

I'd like to suggest a different route. With an external data base, the mapping can be done outside of Thunderbird and then it's just a matter of handling a csv spreadsheet import. It will make Thunderbird a lot cleaner, and as a bonus, will enable much better control of privacy for the poor unfortunates who end up in Address Books on mobile devices. Being the "authority" everyone syncs with is strictly a commercial advantage. It's actually a data processing disadvantage; a big one.
