Why isn't enigmail / pgp part of Thunderbird?

It would go along way toward getting PGP more mainstream.

PGP is about a trillion times better as far as actually being able to
trust signatures and whatnot than CA's are. Comodo gave me a cert
without anything but me replying to an e-mail.

Verisign is laffable at best.

Thawte is about the only CA I trust. PGP is hotness.

It would be -really- nice to see TBird support Inline PGP and PGP/MIME
OOB with no additional software necessary.

But even if it still required GnuPG to be installed, that's no big deal.

But having it one step closer to being OOB would be bonus!!

Although, the only downside of that I suppose, would be that updates to
enigmail would be restricted to updates of Thunderbird, which could be
many months between.

It's won't fix though, the developers say it should just be handled by
an extension....

What an easy way for Mozilla to cop out of developing things, lol.

Someone else can just write an extension!!!

Not necessarily, enigmail could be shipped as an "Out of box" extension,
such as DOMi.. which "can" be updated seperately.

That is not true, at least not in the current scheme of how we ship
extensions. If we get the installer work done to actually download
optional extensions, this will be fine.

But as long, updating a shipped extension out-of-band will likely break
incremental updates. It's either a shipped extension or not, I'd say.

Ahh, forgive me, I had not realized incremental update _required_ sync
with all those optional components.

Well if nothing else, the extensions required to do PGP could be
included in the installer, to "promote" PGP.

Especially since they even mention on enigmail's site that the next
major version will likely require Core code changes anyway, lol

The bug is not wontfix, and there is actually some movement in this
area. We are currently in the (slow) process of integrating Enigmail
into Seamonkey. Thus, there is some hope that sometime in the future
Enigmail /might/ also be part of Thunderbird.

Isn't this blocked by the IPC library landing in tree and someone owning it?

I have offered to take over the ownership for the moment, so that should
not be an issue anymore.
